Ok, to make a long story short....I had my surgery and developed an abscess. I am now having to pack it twice per day but, not really any pain. My problem is that I need to be taking in atleast 70gm of protein per day. I actually was doing really well with the protein and fluids until they opened the abscess. It seems since then every protein I try makes me gag....even just carnation instant breakfasts are too sweet for me it seems.

I have been trying some protein water which is only 5gm but they dont bother me.....but I know I cant get 70gm from that. I am just looking for any suggestions as far as protein that can be added to water......I spoke with Dr Paciulli yesterday at the wound clinic and she said the milky ones might just be to hard for me now.

So, any and all suggestions would be helpful!

Hi, a very good source of protein is the Isopure drinks.  they have 40 grams of protein, and are not bad.  You can get them at GNC.

I second the Isopure drinks.  I have 1 every day.

I actually tried them....I liked them before but, now they make me gag! Thanks for the suggestion though. I guess I will wait and see if I can drink them later....I actually have like 12 bottles in my fridge. I wish I did like them now since they have so much protein!

I couldn't do chocolate or vanilla postop for the reason you stated.  They were so sweet they gagged me.  Designer Whey makes a couple of fruit flavored options that did better for me.  Isopure makes a Pineapple Orange Banana that's pretty good too.  Failing that, you can add some instant decaf coffee to chocolate to make mocha which takes back a lot of the sweetness.

Have you tried Any Whey?  It has a SLIGHTLY sweet taste but is basically non-flavored and can be added to a number of foods/beverages.  I've tried it mixed into Crystal Lite and stirred it into soups and/or yogurt.  It has about 17 grams of protein per scoop.  It helped me get in protein at a time when everything was tasting pretty lousy.  Syntrax makes powdered protein drink called Fuzzy Navel that might work better for you.  If you mix it with orange Crystal Lite it tastes better, although I'found I no longer liked the taste myself.  You can find these at Nashua Nutrition in Nashua.  They are also online and you can order samples from them of many of the protein drinks so you don't end up with a big canister of something you don't like.

Hi Lucy,

Good to hear from you. Sorry to hear about your difficulty. I don't have the experience to have any advice for you, but I wish you well!

Thanks everyone...I think I will go to Nashua nutrition and see what they have there...I figured if I liked something before surgery and even right after that it would not be a problem!
