1/23 QOTD: What's your favorite winter activity?
Mine is downhill skiing! I've been skiing since I was 5 - our family went all the time and I'm so glad I learned when I was that young. I continued skiing even when I was over 300 lbs, but I was exhausted the next day and had to stop on the way down because of leg and foot cramps. I've been lucky to ski in Wyoming and Colorado as well as New England. My favorite area is Bretton Woods.

Now, see, that's something I might try now, but it scares the crap out of me, thinking about going a zillion miles an hour down a mountain! Isn't it kind of like skydiving, without the sky? :o)

Sounds good. I can start a new post. I know there's a place called Beaver Brook, but it's in Hollis. They do different snow shoe events, and I think the price, which is reasonable ($20?) includes snow shoes. Other places come to mind:
Earl Legacy Park in Bedford,
Massabesic Lake
Bear Brook State Park
behind Saint Anselm's College
With snow shoes, you can really go just about anywhere . . .
I will look into Beaver Brook too before I do the post, just to put it out there.

that sounds great, and where they offer rentals, that would be a great place for everyone to start, and find out if they like it. Then they can make the decision to buy or not, and we could do further trips. It just sounds like so many want to try it. I know I definately want to. I used to snowshoe as a child, in the old fashion ones that had the pole at the heel that you had to dig into the snow to turn!!
Hopefully when you first start, you won't be going a zillion miles. Take a lesson or 2 - that will help you learn how to slow down & stop. Bobbi (who's 50) just started a couple of years ago and the lessons really helped. Then after a bit you can zoom down - it's exhilirating!!

My No. 1 is maintaining and enjoying our winter bird feeding station. It is work but I get such a thrill seeing the birds and such a good feeling knowing it helps them make it through the storms and season. I tend it every single day.
No. 2 is snowshoeing. Just my speed and I love the peace and quiet of the woods. No machines for me-sorry. T
