hair loss and supplements
Well...here i am...just over 4 months and my hair is falling out in clumps. I know its expected, and i think as i've heard 4-6 months is the time that it really goes. I was wondering if anyone takes any special supplements. I've tried very hard to make sure i meet my protien goals everyday, but was just wondering if anyone has tried something else. I guess i am glad i had a VERY thick head of hair to start!
Hi Kris,
I think the key is protein. I noticed my fingernails were splitting, and I was loosing hair too. Try and supplement protein with Isopure or shakes. Now that I am getting more protein in, I noticed that my nails are coming back, and my hair is falling out less.
I am a lap band, so it is unusual for us to have that problem, but I was not really paying too close attention to protein. I found that GNC's Lean Muscle Meal shake mix is very good...expensive, but good. I use 1/2 package per shake.
Also make sure you are getting your calcium in too.

Hi Kris,
I am still losing my hair, but like you, I have thick hair. It's mostly coming from underneath and not on top. I think it's part of the process and trauma of our surgery. I also lost my hair about 4 month post-partum with all my kids. I think I'm getting enough protein in and have just recently been very good about getting all my calcium in. The hair falling out seems to have slowed down, but it has been a good 2 months now of losing it. Mine doesn't come out in clumps, but I can get a good 8-10 strands if I run my hand through my hair and tug a little. Good luck and continued success!

Hi Kris,
I lost a lot of hair especially in the front right around my hair line. It started pretty early and has just started to slow down and I'm 7 mos out. I have thin hair as it is so it was very upsetting.
I take biotin daily but I'm not sure if it helped all that much - I hate to even imagine if it were any worse. My nails were pretty bad too but they are much better. I also cut my hair differently to try to mask the loss. It's still all worth it though.
Hang in there - you're not alone!

Kris,
I don't think there's anything by way of supplements that you can take to stop the hair loss. It's just a part of the surgery process for some of us. I read somewhere that the hair loss is the result of your protein intake (or lack thereof) from about 4 months ago, which is back when you weren't able to eat as much. It will stop falling out in time and their hair you lost will start to grow back. Just hang in there!
