Hi Kathy,

The other night at the DHMC meeting you said something that sort of woke me up.  It was about the calcium and how important it is to get your daily requirement in.  You said something to the fact that if you don't get enough calcium, your body will take it from your bones.  That kind of scared me.  I certainly don't want bone issues later on.  SOOO, I am proud to say I am on day 2 of taking all my calcium pills.  I set the timer on my oven for 2 hours to remind me to take another pill.  And, after taking 4, I'm done for the day.  When I'm done with all the calcium pills I have now, I'll go out and get the 600mg pills so I will just have to take 2/day.  I just wanted you to know that by saying that, you helped me.  Thank you!!

Thanks, I'm glad I helped.  Actually, I hadn't put much weight on the whole calcium issue either until my last doctor appointment.  I was taking the Viactiv chews before that, which are from calcium carbonate.  But I liked the taste, and they doubled as a treat for me, so I didn't want to give them up.  But when the doctor reviewed my labs, she noticed that one of my glands was very active (don't remember the name of it).  Anyway, she said that when that gland is active, that is a sign that it is pulling the calcium from my bones; that the carbonate was not being absorbed enough by my body and that I would have to start taking the citrate.  That was my wake-up call, and I've been swallowing 1800 mgs. of those horse pills daily ever since.

I also had some numbness on the top of my right foot, which she said might be the start of a Vitamin B-12 deficiency.  Damage done to our bodies from being deficient in B-12 can be irreversible and life threatening.  I was taking B-12 by pill before that.  Now I take the sublinqual ones, but unlike Linda's advice to take them once a week, Tufts says we should be taking 1200 mgs. daily, which is what I'm now doing also.  They aren't bad, sort of like a baby aspirin.

I'm glad to hear that what I said yesterday struck a chord.  These support group meetings are supposed to do just that - allow each of us to help each other.  We all have experiences or information that can prove helpful to others, and it makes me feel good to know that I had something to offer that helped you out.  Now if I can just get that nurse (I didn't catch her name) who was sitting next to you to get her labs done regularly . . .  :)

I heard you "trying" to talk to that nurse!  She really should get her labs done.  One of the requirements at DHMC was that after the surgery we had to promise to keep all our appts. and follow-ups.  Not everyone adheres to their promise (I know she had hers done at Tufts, but still.)

I'm taking B-12 twice a week, sublingually.  I believe it's 1000mg pill.  I actually go for my labs today so I'm kind if excited to see where I'm at with everything.  I will def. do whatever I need to keep the inside of my body working.  If that means taking more vitamins, so be it.

Thanks again.  Lisa
