Hello Good People,
I added some whole grain (with Spelt and Flax) pasta to a recipe this week (a TJ product with 7 g of protein in a normal person's serving and all organic and so on).  Right now I need to add carbs and I haven't yet tried raw veggies or fruit.  The cooked veggies I do eat have been no problem (cauliflower, gr beans, onions, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, celery, summer and winter squashes, peas, spinach).  At 4 months post-op, I still struggle to get more than an oz of veggies in at a meal since it is protein first and I get totally full on 3 ozs of anything.  I've used beans with good success.  This week I decided to try the pasta.  I was nervous about dumping but I haven't had any issues.  So many OH's seem cast all pasta out forever.  Even the wh grain pasta is a bad idea, do you think?  I just find it confusing because people always say good carbs are whole grian carbs but whole grain pasta doesn't seem to fall in to this category.  Why not?  Maybe because they are high carb?  Eventually that will matter for me but right now when I can't eat but a mouthful it  a plus in their favor.
While I am at it, when abouts did you begin to try fresh salad?  I am a huge veggie lover but I am nervous.  I am still terrified to try fresh fruit.  I really ought to, though.  Thanks - T

Hi Treading,
I just wanted to say that I don't have any problems with pasta, whole wheat or otherwise.  And you'll find that the further out you get, the more you'll be able to tolerate certain foods.  I'm out almost 16 months, and I can't think of anything that bothers me anymore.  As to when I could eat salads, I think I started eating them around the first of November, which would have been when I was just a month and a half out.  I think it's personal for everyone depending on how well foods are tolerated.  You've had a lot of problems, I didn't, so it may take you longer to be able to eat that stuff.  My suggestion is to try just one raw veggie, like lettuce, and a little only, to see how well you do.  If that goes down - and stays down, then add something else, and so on and so on.

It's funny, preop I thought I would miss all the sweets and salty snacks, but what I really missed was a salad and a grilled cheese.  I've never really missed the bad stuff since the surgery - at least not too much.  There are times when I like a sweet (or two, like these past holidays), but nothing like prior to the surgery.  But take away my green veggies, and I get downright ugly!

So have you followed up on those knitting lessons yet?

Kathy

Hi Treading,
I'm 7 months out and just tried whole grain pasta. I had no issues with it and like you was only able to eat a small amount. It's not something I'll eat on a weekly basis but I think once in a while it's fine.  I tried salad at 3 months out or so and it did not agree with me. I was leary to go back to it but eventually tried it again around 5 months and had no problems. More recently it's gotten to be something I really enjoy. I also can eat a good amount. Funny but before surgury onions were not my favorite and now I love them. I just tried some nuts and did just fine with them :) I find that there are days now when I have to remember to eat and then there are the days when I'm hungry and have to ask myself if it's in my head or am I really hungry. I have not tried anything with sugar and have not experienced dumping - nor do I want to. It does not sound like fun.
I hope things continue to go well for you.

Rosemary

Hi Kathy, Hi Rosemary,
Thanks so much for the input.  Well, I have eaten my chicken fettuccine dish every day this week at work (with the whole grain pasta in it) and it settled very well in the tummy.  I did feel very full but did not dump.  Wonderful.  I plan to try very small amounts of fruit this weekend.  I know berries are the lowest in sugars so I will start with those.  And some lettuce sounds heavenly , so thanks for that tip, Kathy.  BTW - I really like the PB2!!!  And Oh, Yeah bars - where were you hiding?  I only ever have eat 1 stick but these are far and away the best tasting of all the bars I have tried.  And I learned about them here, as usual.  My fav are the chocolate mint.  Yummy.
No knitting class yet, Kath.  But I am working hard on a vest for myself.  I will also start attending my local area Knitting Guild meetings this month.  The group meets in Antrim on the last Tuesday and a member tells me it is a real pool of talent and they all sort of teach one another.  I am on fire to learn to make hats and mittens.  What fun.
I saw the hematologist this morning.  Some of my blood levels were a little better but I am still very iron deficient and some of my levels pretty well stink.  I have a new supplement to try but if my ferretin isn't up by March 6th - I'll start IV iron infusions.  I am not so anemic that I need to worry about transfusions.  That makes me very happy.  This doc agrees with my surgeon that the anemia probably doesn't explain most of my symptoms (muscle weakness and fatigue).  Next stop for me is the Endo and maybe the testing I'm having next week (related to adrenal and pituitary glands) will provide some answers.  Hope so.  Sort of.
I ordered a food dehydrator and all the things I need to make homemade jerky.  I still feel it is worth the effort to have a really good, really portable source of protein for the road with no chance of running into trouble on carbs of any kind.  It would seem I am going to dump at the drop of a hat.  so be it.  I just have to work with it.
Finally, a product review.  I ordered some PUMPKORN - organic, seasoned pumpkin seeds (from netrition.com).  Really tasty and low carb and high fiber and high protein.  Also very portable.  Have a nice weekend, friends. T
