Xylitol Scare
Well for all of you that don't know the artificial sweetener, Xylitol, is potentially fatal to dogs, so we had to take both of my puppies to the emergency vet clinic last night. We were about ready to go to bed at 9:45, and I came into the living room from the kitchen and found a box of sugar free gum on the floor chewed open. All the gum was missing. There were about 8 pieces still in the pack. Well, I immediately checked th list of ingredients, and Xylital was the first on listed. I called the clinic, and was told to give them each 2 tsps of hydrogen perioxide to induce vomiting. If that did not work, try another dose. Well, of course, it did not work, so off we went to Portsmouth. We got them there, and they immediately took them. They put a pill to induce vomiting into their eyelid, which sounded totally strange to me!!! Well, needless to say, my Jack Russell (Pebbles) ate most of the gum. Mya only had a few pieces in her stomach. So at 12:15 am, and $265 later, we headed home. The vet checked their blood sugar, and it was "normal", although Pebbles was a tiny bit low.
So now I am on my way to take them to their vet to get their blood sugar tested again. Hopefully we caught it in time, and there will be no permanent damage.
If you have sugar free gum in your house, and you have dogs, make sure to keep it safely out of their reach. I thought it was, but they got it anyway. I am just glad that I knew that it was potentially fatal. Right now they are sleeping....I feel sorry for hubby, who had to go to work today. Thank goodness, I have the week off!!!

Well, just returned from the vet, and need to go back at 5 for another blood sugar recheck. Both Mya and Pebbles blood sugar dropped, Mya's considerably. If it continues to drop, then it is back to the clinic for a dextrose drip and overnight stay$$$$ Then it is a complete blood chemistry in a week to make sure there is no liver damage....
WHAT A NIGHTMARE
WHAT A NIGHTMARE
Well, puppies are home. Pebble's blood sugar level dropped just slightly, and Mya's increased slightly. So they are letting them stay home tonight. We just have to wake them a couple of times tonight. Then it is back to the vet for another glucose level....
So this stuff can cause bleeding issues, liver damage, kidney damage, and diabetic comas. Incredible. So make sure you check labels and such before letting any animal eat anything sugar free.

I'm so glad your pouches are doing better and I hope they are truly out of the woods. What a scare! If I ever knew about xylitol, I had forgotten about it. Your posting this is such a help to me. We are just about to adopt two cats and I have 3 dogs. How awful to think such hazards can be lying around and we don't have a clue. I'm so grateful you posted about this. T
Hi Treading,
I felt I really needed to post this because of the sugar free products we use. I think the only reason I remembered was because both are puppies, Mya is 8 months, Pebbles 13 months, so I just received literature about all the different things that are poisonous to dogs and cats.
We are still not out of the woods with Pebbles. Her blood sugar was still low, and I had a hard time waking her up last night to check on her. They are taking another level tonight, and also blood for a complete chemistry.
I have to admit, my vets are awesome. They are right on top of this, and being cautious. I could not ask for anyone better to treat my pups.
