Medical Referral Survey

Hello Friends,
I'm conducting a survey.  When you get a referral to a specialist from your PCP or other doctor - do you routinely have to wait a week or more for the specialist to receive the faxed referral?  I'm just wondering if my PCP's office has a process that is unusual.  My PCP is quick to give me a referral.  That part is good.  but from there I am at the mercy of the referral staff which is one woman who is always behind and often screws things up royally.  But it doesn't matter, she is the referral czar and if she gets sick or goes on vacation - you're just out of luck.  My sister is in medicine in MA and she can't believe I have waited a week for my referral to see the hematologist considering how sick I am with this awful anemia.  My PCP "made" the referral last Friday and here I sit waiting for the call from the referral czar cuz the specialist won't book the apt for me without the referral.  Does this match your experience at all?

I'm really struggling as you can see.  I drag my butt through my days and I ache all over cuz my muscles can't get enough oxygen.  eating is going fine but the rest is a misery still.  Here's hoping I'll get some effective Tx soon.  treading

My PCP's practice is good about faxing referrals out right away. You may want to call your doc and tell him/her the problem, they may not be aware of the situation. This should not be happening, and is unacceptable.

Good luck....

Thanks for the feedback, Trundy.  I appreciate it.  Well, well, well - called the PCP and I learn they sent the referral last Friday.  Called the hema and no referral is there.  PCP sent another - not there.  Finally, on the third call, I got my apt and I have to wait a month!    What a world, eh?

Don't even listen to me.  I'm just frustrated and exhausted and it is showing.

Stay safe out there.  I hear the driving is slick right now in the Concord area.  Here is some great news - Robert's Soy Crisps are working well for me.  I need good carbs and these fit the bill near enough.  Ho Ho Ho.  Treading

Could you call the office back and ask to be put on a cancellation list? Every drs office should have spots open each day for urgent cases and not make people wait weeks to be seen......that is my rant on the subject....

Good to hear the soy crisps are working for you, at least you caught a small break for a change.

Thanks for heads up, I'm in Portsmouth so hopefully it won't be as slick here, but knowing my luck it will be. I hate driving in this stuff.....I haven't stuck my head outside yet to see how bad it is, not sure I want to.

I'm sending positive thoughts your way.....

Usually not the experience I have.

I think you should talk to the office manager of the place you go to.  Sorry you have not found any relief yet.  On a similar, but different note I do not think I am anemic as I thought.  Come to find out I have a staph infection brewing in my wound.  On to more antibiotics!

Great Scott, Jenn!
When will this madness end?  Do I understand that you have multiple infective organisms in that wound now?  Wow.  I don't know what to say.  You must be so weary.  Lawd knows I am and I haven't had to make twice weekly trips to PRH for 12 weeks.  Good grief.
Here's a heads up - certain anti-b's and iron pills do not mix.  More fun ahead for both of us, it seems.  But that 60 + lb weight loss is a hefty thing to place on the other side of the scale in eighinhg the pros and cons of WLS, no?.  Good for you.  Are you enjoying the getting in to new clothes?  Treading

The referrals lady at my PCP always has it in by the end of the day.  If I have a really late appointment, like 4pm or later, it might be the next day over lunch.  But a week?  That's REALLY bad!

Lord, give me stregth and when I lack it, patience.

I have Dartmouth Hitch**** and I don't think they fax.  I'm pretty sure it is all done via snail-mail.  However, the referral person has always been great about making it effective for the day I make the request.  I can go online and print off the details of my referral and how long it is good for.  Sorry you are having problems.  I know waiting can be soooo nerve wracking!  Good luck, it WILL happen if you keep on slugging at it.

Hello,

I am a Medical office manager and wanted to let you know that 24 hrs is the norm to get a referral.  As far as your specialist, you need the appointment before you can get the referral.  If you feel you need to be seen sooner, ask your PCP office to call and get a sooner based on medical necessity.  If they won't ask to talk to the office manager.
Good luck

Thanks to All,
I do appreciate the feedback.  I spoke with the office manager who could not explain why the referral wasn't properly faxed last week.  Though I am very pleased with my PCP, this is not a one time problem.  I have waited a month or more in the past.  Well, I probably need to let it go cuz I've communicated my displeasure and I have the apt.  I'm on a cancel list but I am the 24th person on that list!!!!

I see my surgeon tomorrow (I think, depending on the weather) and I hope to get labs done to check the status of my anemia.  I have no idea how quickly it might worsen or improve so I am very concerned that I not bottom out and go right off the anmeia ledge, so to speak.

I must go lie down.  By this time of day, I am nothing but a vaneer of myself.  LOL  Take care - Treading
