Home From Hospital Again

Hi Folks,
I'm still having a very rough time.  I was readmitted to PRH on Wed - all that horrible diarrhea was due to a severe over-reaction to the Arixtra (blood thinner) causing internal bleeding and also possibly over medication of hypertension medication.  The bleeding caused severe diarrhea and the low blood pressure causes....severe dizziness.  I also developed intense pain in my left quadrant.  OK, well I am some better but terribly weak.  And today the diarrhea is starting up again.  I am still very dizzy at times.  My blood work had normalizd so the thinkiing was the bleeding had stopped.  So, why the diarrhea?  Maybe lactose intolerance on top of everything else?  Great.
I've switched to soy milk in my protein drink and I'm going to not use CIBs at all from now on.  I don't know what else to do?  I'm working real hard to try to stay hydrated.  I've also taken immodium and I will certainly be on the phone to the docs tomorrow if not sooner.  My pain is quite high, too, Jenn.  It is slowly getting better at my incisions but by 2.5 hrs after a dose- I am quite uncomfortable.  I'm going to post on the RNY board for more info on lactode intolerance or other intolerances.  Any ideas here?  Thanks so much - DH is scared silly and I am rattled and no mistake!  Treading

Oh boy Treading!  What an ordeal you have been through.  I was having gas and extreme diahrea a few days after my surgery.  I "think" I narrowed it down to me not tolerating Splenda.  I stopped anything with it in it and I have been much better.  I tried some no sugar added ice cream (they use Splenda instead of sugar) last night and about 1/2 hour after, I was bloated, gassy and very uncomfortable.  Not fun, but it seems you are 100 times worse.  I hope you can find out what the problem is.  Keep us updated.

Geez Treading, I'm so sorry to hear that you're having a bad time of it.  I wish I had some ideas as to how to relieve some of the discomfort and anxiety.  I just want to say that my thoughts are with you.  You appear to be doing all you can.  Keep in close contact with your doc.  I hope that all these problems can be put behind you quickly.  It will be all worth it, I'm sure, soon.  Really.  Keep the chin up.

Hi again,
Diarrhea is ongoing but I still am feeling better with time.  The dizziness is letting up and the pain is more reasonable.  I am sipping constantly and so hope to keep ahead of the dreaded "D" word.
Thinking about possible causes and I sure hope Splenda isn't the issue - it is in everything! I was actively trying to avoid lactose so i haven't had anything dairy (no yogurt, no cottage cheese).  But that means I've had more splenda as I've had several sf jellos and sf pudding.  Between a rock and a hard place here.  But I do feel stronger and like I am on the med.  Slowly but sure;y..... let's hope.  Treading

The lactose intolerance is SO common that after my surgery I just stayed away from all milk products.  I went with soy milk.  My favorites are Silk soymilk in vanilla - not the very vanilla and not the plain.  It's a very mild flavor.  So whatever powdered protein supplement you are using actually provides the flavor.

I have two friends who both claim to have a Splenda problem, but it's self diagnosis based on having GI problems and noticing many products used have Splenda - but not paying any attention to if those products tend to be very cold or very hot, which can cause pouch sensitivity or if they are dairy or anything.  I was putting Splenda in my shakes about a month out with no problems.  I only switched back to "real dairy" at four months out and I've had no problems with it.

Had you are feeling a little better now.  You've had such a hard time of it.  I had problems with the blood thinner, too.  I ended up back in the hospital for 24 hours survellience with some internal bleeding.  Not bad, it stopped right after I got to the ER, but right as I was getting back on my feet it was back to square one, which was psychologically challenging.

I think you already figured out the trick: keep sipping all the time, regardless of if you want to or if you are thirsty.  If your not eating (or just before or after) or sleeping, you should be sipping.

Come check in here when you feel up to it.  We want to know how you are doing.  :-)

Take care!

Lord, give me stregth and when I lack it, patience.

I'm so sorry you're so ill.  I hope you are doing better today.  As a new postop, I couldn't do lactose either.  I was getting my Soy Protein from GNC.  They have several different flavors.  After about 6 months, I found I could do milk again.  Don't know why this happened but it did.

I will keep you in my prayers for a fast recovery.  Things will get better from here.
