9/14 QOTD: Easier Said Than Done!
We're already pretty frugal. I clip coupons and buy my gas at Stop & Shop, where I save $$$ based on what I've spent at the grocery store. We changed all of our lightbulbs in the house to compact fluorescents. We unplug our appliances when not in use, like the tv, washer & dryer. Even making purchases online, I go through the upromise website, so that we get a rebate on our purchase price that is eventually used to pay down the college loans. We rarely, if ever, get take-out. I bring my lunch to work with me everyday.
But we go out to dinner every Friday night, and I get my nails done every other week, and we travel to the Caribbean one week each year, so I guess those are splurges that we could do without. But the way I look at it, I'm careful in so many other ways, that I can use the $$$ money saved by all of our other actions and put it towards these few things that we really enjoy.

"I am not the skin I'm in, but the soul within."
I can think of a bazillion really simple things I could do that would save money. I could give up the gym and work out at home. I could not put drink mix ins into my water. I could have skipped bracelet night at the Rochester Fair with my four kids. I could walk around my own boring neighborhood instead of hiking on the weekends to save gas money.
There are tons of things I could do.
But I'm not willing to. I'm lucky, I don't have to. We make enough money that I can afford good shampoo and subscribing to my favorite magazines and going to Victoria Secret to get new bras that fit my new (smaller) boobs. That's what the money is for. You can't take it with you, so you may as well use it. I have enough to cover my needs, some of my wants, and a few occasional full out splurges. If I only had enough to cover my needs, then I couldn't indulge myself. But having a VERY frugal mother who never used her money to enjoy herself, I don't really see the point in hoarding more than a reasonable rainy day savings account.
I have enough to cover us for a few months if my husband was out of work, we have money set aside for retirement and some set aside for the kids college. I drive an old minivan and my husband drives a car on it's last legs. But we don't really want anything more from our vehicles than getting us reliably from point A to point B. Which they do fine. Other than that, I'd rather go on vacation. :-)
