Mount Washington

I recently put this in an new hampshire hike web site. People were so surprized at what i and other people have accomplished since having surgery. In fact the second week of september I am going back up washington except this time i am staying overnight at lake in the clouds and am hiking down the next morning

Since I was a kid I had alwaysed dreamed of hiking mount washington, and sure I had gone up it by the auto rd on summer about 10 years ago while i was camping after college.

July 12 I left my house early and kissed my sleeping wife goodbye And told her i would see her later. I drove 2.5 hours and arrived at the base of the cog railroad. I got my gear totether and headed foe the Amomonoosoc ravine trail. I was talking With paul hison, and nephew, and dog, who were surprised that i was doing this trail alone.

You see On november 18 2006 I entered a program threw portsmouth hospital for gastric bypass. On that date i was weighed in at 522 lbs. I needed to looses 72 lbs for surgery. So with a combination of diet, exercise On january 15 2008 I had a sucessful surgery. Today I am 100 lbs lighter than surgery weight. I have lost a total of 172 ( last weigh in July 1 2008).

I have always enjoyed the outdoors heck that is why I am a groundskeeper for a school district. I used my love as my exercixe I walked many trails along the state park in mass to get to this point.

Anyways I hiked up to lake in the clouds and the top of washington you could not see. I ate my lunch and refilled my water bottles. and head up to washington . About halfway there I met up with paul and the gang heading down congradulating me on my acomplishment so far the top was almost in sight. I reached the top late in the afternoon. I was so happy Still can not explain it.

I took the cog down the mountain It took me 7 hours to get to the top and even though i had my head lamp I was not sure on how long it would take to get down.

Considering by medical standards i am still obese, I think i did pretty dang good for my first 4000 footer in nh. Next time i will leave earlyer and hike up and down it. I can not wait til i do it again.

How wonderful, Scotti.  Thanks for sharing this with us and others.  I spent a summer in the YCC working in the White Mountains.  I hiked and cut brush and worked about every foot of the Presidential Range and many, many other peaks.  I think back on that and how healthy I was then and it is so inspiring to me to think I might one day return to some of those places.  Bully for you.  Treading

Do any of you know what a nice hike would be either on the Kangamangus or someplace in southern NH?  We did Sabbaday Falls a while back, which is too easy now, but I know that I'm not ready for Mt. Washington either.  Anyone have any ideas?  Maybe a 5 mile hike with a small incline?

BTW, big WOW going out to you, Scotty!

Hi:

A nice 5 miler in southern NH is in Pawtuckaway State Park going in on the Deerfield side.   Get a trailmap book of Southern NH trails.  The North Mountain/North Mountain by-pass trail has some incline - some views and takes a few hours to do.  You go by Devil's Cave and at the top of North Mountain is a billboard that was used by someone to reflect radio waves off of.  Pretty cool.  Hiking in Pawtuckaway is especially beautiful in the fall and not too far away from the Manchester area.  There are other trails that are varying skill levels.  You don't need to be ready to hike Mt. Washington to conqueor these trails.

If you would like some company on these trails, I live in Deerfield and would love to hook up with someone to go.  Have to wait until I heal from my surgery.

Also if you get the book 50 Hikes in the White Mountains - there are some easy and some very hard hikes in there - explains the whole hike and what to expect with the degree of difficulty.

Hi Dianne,
Thanks for the info.  I think I'll pick up a coy of the book.  And when you're ready to take the hike, let me know.  I'd love to go with you, and I know a couple of other people who may want to join us too -- see NH Skinny Girl's comment below!
Good luck with your surgery.  Are you still scheduled for the 5th?  I heard Dr. P. got sick and had to cancel her upcoming appointments.

Hi:

I will make sure that I e-mail you when I am ready to conqueor the park again.  I am still hoping that my surgery is the 5th.  I will know more tomorrow.  Dr. P. had surgery today and she is suppose to check in with the office to schedule/unschedule whoever.

Wish me luck!
