total costs

My explanation of benefits came today for my surgery last month.  The bills just for the day of surgery add up to $27K.  Yikes!  I have to pay 30% of the prescription drugs an medical equipment used, which ends up being about $3,000.  (I didn't realize ahead of time how much MY share would be!  Thank goodness for my emergency savings account.  I will easily save that much in fast food and groceries over the next few years, so it's a small price to pay for such a HUGE benefit.)

If I get a chance, I'll go through all of my other paperwork and add up the cost of the nutritionist, physical therapist, behavior mod classes, psych eval, etc. to see what the total cost was.

It's definitely nowhere NEAR the estimates given at the informational meetings.

I am very very thankful for insurance, and very thankful that I decided to go ahead and do it!

Im not sure what the exact total was, but I only had to pay $600 total out of pocket for surgery, and whatever the Psych stuff was....  All of my prescrips where $5, except for the liquid Vit D I have to take - for some reason its only covered in pill form....go figure!

PS, I have NH Anthem.  They rock!

I have Anthem too.  Apparently I was given fourteen prescriptions during the surgery, so $400 is my copay for them.  (The bill was $1400 and I have to pay a 30% copay on them.)

It's amazing how different plans cover different things.  I'm just glad that they covered as much of the total cost as they did!

Thank Goodness for Insurance, my bills for my bypass were over $60K, all I've ever had to pay with Mathew Thornton Blue are $5 Co-pays for any office visits and usually $10-20 for prescriptions.  I know I never would've been able to afford the surgery on my own.

Were your prescriptions used during the surgery only $10?  I only have a $10 copay on prescirptions normally, so that's why I am questioning why the prescriptions used in the hospital were so much more.  (Even at ten bucks a pop, it still would cost me $140.)

Any prescription you used during the hospital should be part of the overall bill and not separated for co-pays.  The co-pays are only used for when you get your meds from a pharmcy with a script or call in.  I'd check with your insurance and find out why you are paying for meds given to you as part of your hospital stay.  I've had a few insurances over the years and have never heard of co-pays for meds given during hospital stay.

I will definitely call the insurance co and check-  but here's what it says in my BCBS Benefit Plan booklet:  "Outpatient drugs, medical devices, and durable equipment billed for by a hospital or freestanding ambulatory facility, such as: prescribed drugs, orthopedic and prosthetic devices, durable medical equipment."  30% of the Plan Allowance.

So the hospital bills one thing, but the plan allowance is a litle less, and I pay 30% of the plan allowance.

I haven't gotten the actual bill from the hospital, just the EOB from the insurance.

Hi Michele,
I'd question the co-pay.  The key word from above is "outpatient".  Does your plan tell you how in patient benefits are structured?  I have a co-pay on Rxs but my inpatient benefit is 100%.  I also have never heard of anyone having to pay a copay on meds administered during surgery or as a result of surgery for an in-patient procudeure.  Good luck in getting it sorted out.  Treading

My procedure was done on an outpatient basis.

Hmmm.... I've had three surgeries done as "day surgeries" but they were all covered as in patient hospital procedures.  I never paid a dime in co-pays for any of the meds used then.  Well, I'm sure calling is the best thing to do.  Treading
