A newbie
Hi, my name is Martha, and I am scheduled for lap band surgery on August 15. I am excited and nervous at the same time. My question is how have do yo maintained focus while waiting for your surgery. Mine is somewhat "out" because of scheduling. I have continued to lose weight, exceeding my required weight loss, but it has been up and down. Also, I just want to know what it is like the first week after surgery. What can you do and not do? Any input would be greatly appreciated
Hi Martha,
Mostly I wanted to say "Pleased to meet you!" Focus? What's that? I'm scheduled for Sept 16th but for RNY so can't help you much. The time seems to drag for me and then I get busy and it whips on by. I have 16 appointments (medical and vet and hair dresser etc) between now and my surgery. I guess staying busy is my method. So glad to have you here and Aug 15th is right around the corner - Treading

Welcome to the board. I had lap rny about 10 months ago, and I just want to say that I didn't stay focused that last month before my surgery! I had lost the required weight, plus a little more. Good thing because, being an emotional eater, I was nervous and scared at the same time, and a few pounds crept back on right before the surgery. You don't want to do that, but then again, neither did I! Anyway, I just wanted to say welcome. Having had RNY, I can't really speak to your requirements/limitations after lap-band surgery.
"I am not the skin I'm in, but the soul within."
I didn't really stay focused the month before either. I had lost more than the required amount, so I wasn't too worried (although I did have a HUGE scare Monday morniung when I stepped on the scale and it showed a HUGE gain-- that's what I get for eating prime rib the night before!)
Luckily it was just a temporary weight gain and the scale was back to normal the next day.
Yesterday was the most difficult day for me, because you have to be on a clear liquid diet the day before the surgery. I thought it was going to kill me, so I made a huge to do list, and just kept very very busy.

How are you feeling this morning? I am doing better, but I keep fluctuating within 2 to 3 pounds, but luckly never get near my goal weight. Did you find that you wanted to eat everything that you think you can't after surgery? That is what I am running into right now. My husband keeps saying, can you have this? I know I can't for a while, but I know I can eventually. I just keep thinking of the long term goal.
In the two weeks before surgery, I went to McDonald's to eat my "last" Big Mac (which tasted nasty.) I went to a steak house for my last prime rib (which wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as I had fantasized) and I went to KFC for my favorite mashed potatoes, which I couldn't even finish, because I don't know- they just didn't taste as good as I remember.
I was going to go to Burger King for my last whopper, but then I realized that none of my "favorite" foods tasted right, so why bother?
I'm going to try to remember that I had outgrown the taste of that crap even BEFORE I had the surgery.
I am feeling a little sore this morning, but only when getting up and sitting down (or bending over.)

Hey MArtha, Hey C,
Man, you are a marvel, C Up and doing and writing on Day 1? Very wonderful. Day 2 and you are just a bit sore? Wow again. The 'last supper syndrome' never has happened to me yet. I had just your experience - nothing 'naughty' had the flavor I thought it would or remembered it having. I have not allowed myself to play around with sugars though. So sweets have been right out for me since January.
Boy, it has sure been true for me that simple carbs make me crave simple carbs! If I have bread or rice or potato - I am starving an hour later and I want crackers and sweets. If I stick to a low-carb, high protein diet - I can control my appetite so much better. Prime rib though, that I could still enjoy. Treading
