Here's a queston for all you RNY people- I know you need to take vitamin supplements and watch your protein intake, but what exactly do you have to take on a day to day basis? ~Donna

One adult multivitamin a day, 2 calcium + D (currently taking Citracal Creamy Bites, but they've been discontinued, so when my supply is gone, I'll probably take the Citracal Petites). For the first six months post-op, I also had to take Pepcid twice a day, but I don't have to do that anymore.   I just had lab work done about a month ago, and all of my levels were great.

Thanks for your input guys!  I'm weighing the pros and cons of RNY vs lapband and wanted that part of the puzzle.  You were a big help   and I appreciate your input. ~Donna

I take a Centrum Chewable multi-vit in the morning, two Viactiv calcium chews (those things are YUMMY!) at noon, and another Centrum Chewable multi-vit. in the evening.  Also once a day I take a Pepcid (my insurance didn't cover Prevacid), which I cut in half.  The Pepcid isn't forever but for the first three months, and as needed if you develop ulcers.   At three months out I have my first lab work done to check for vitamen deficiencies and if they find anything that I'm low in, like iron or B-12 or anything - then I start taking it then.  But nothing more than a multi-vit twice a day and calcium unless there is something you are low in.

Heck, from what I'm hearing, I would hardly end up taking anything different than I do now.  Just on general principles, I take the generic equivalent of a centrum silver multivit and 2 calcium citrate w/ D tabs on a daily basis.  I also have to take synthroid every day because I have no thyroid, so I need to have annual lab done anyway.  Humm.   The more I research, the more inclined I am to go toward RNY.  Definitely something to think about and discuss at my first appointment at the OTC later this month.  ~Donna

Umber, You need to take a calcium citrate for your calcium. Your Viactiv are the wrong calcium. They are carbonate and we get the benefit for good bone health from the citrate.  Just and FYI.

Wow, your so right.  I KNEW we were supposed to take citrate and the Viactiv doesn't say what kind it is on the bottle, so I just figured that since my NUT had actually specially recommended it, it must be citrate.  But I had to go to their website to find out it wasn't.  That stinks cause I had calcium from Bariatric Advantage and it was so absolutely disgusting it was like sucking on chalk.  Actually, worse.  And if you don't bite it, you just suck, it doesn't ever dissolve.  It's still in you cheek an hour later.  It was super nasty.  :-(   Have you found any citrate that isn't chalk?

Hi Umber, I never did the calcium in liquid form. When I was first out I just crushed my pills for the first 6 months, to the day, they are vile crushed but I did not know there was a liquid form. As soon as I didn't have to crush my pills I just use the calcium citrate w/D from Wal-mart I think it's the Nature Valley brand. But I would check out Vitamin World (we have one in Nashua, near the Pheasant Lane Mall) they have a great selection. I use to get mine at BJ's Wholesale but we stopped our membership there and Wal-Mart was just an easy place to get them. I get a big bottle for under 20.00 and it lasts 2-3 months.  Sorry to burst your bubble with the Viactiv but You want to keep those bones as healthy as possible. have a great day..

I can't do crushed.  I'll just look into some other brand of chewables.  The Bariatric Advantage is a chewable calcium citrate, but they are so vile.  Check out the product reviews and they are almost universally hated.   I'll surf on over to product reviews and see what people think of Building Blocks or some of those other types.  Everyone was into the Citrical Chewable Bites which WERE citrate, but they quit making them a few months ago and now they are all gone.  :-( Liquid calcium.  Hmmmm.  There's an idea.  I'll look into it.  I'm way over on the seacoast so if I don't order online I'm going to The Natural Pharmacy in Dover.  They have an insane amount of choice on vitamens.
