Thanks so much to all of you!  I didn't feel uncomfortable with what they were saying, just wondered if I should give the bypass a think.  I wonder if anyone who has had the band has found losing the weight so hard that they wish they had gone with the bypass instead?  I liked Dr. Gens very much too, he seemed very layed back and easy going. Thanks again for the advice.  So, any Band people out there regret getting the band instead of bypass?

Very good question. I'd love to know also!

I suggest you also post this on the Lap Band board here at OH.  You will receive lots of information there from folks who have had the Band.

As for the time stamp... OH is based in California.. thus the 3 hour time difference  :-)

Good idea!  I'm not sure I know how, but I'm gonna try!

I'm a little confused about which would be better for me too.  I have a toddler, and a full time job without many sick days, which is why I thought the band would be better for me.  When I went to the info night in Derry, I felt like they were pushing the bypass over the band.  (They weren't REALLY pushy, but they sure did play up the benefits of gastric!) For me, I would prefer a slower weight loss.  I just worry about the long term effects--  lkie what's going to happen thirty years down the road!  The lap band has only been around for 15 years, so there isn't a whole lot of long term research on it yet. For me though, I think it is still going to be the best choice.  I would LOVE to weight fifty pounds less in a year's time, so the idea of "slow" weight loss doesn't bother me.

My two cents...and i'monly 2 1/2 months out.  I had my surgery at Lowell General, and they didn't push for one surgery over the other..... but I was told by the Nurse Practitioner there and other patients, that The RNY is better.  She herself had the RNY.  I think the Docs are more comfy doing the bypass because it is done so much more often and they've been doing it for so long. the band,,,, so new tomost docs.  I too was planning on having the band, but was convinced to have the RNY after talking to others, research, and the info session.   So far, so good, and I really didn't need a lot of time off.  If you have a very busy, on your feet job, it might be hard to work after the surgery and also make sure you're following the diet, but if you're at a desk, it should be ok after a week or two off.  There was not a lot of pain, besides gas in my shoulder, with this surgery,,,,,,,,,,,Just my experience. Good Luck and best wishes, nicole
