I am currently pre-op and am looking for a copy of the Stage 2 diet plan that is used by DHMC. I would like to try it out so that I can learn which protein drinks, etc I will like. I am looking forward to beginning this journey!

hi Tammy, I can tell you that being post-op your taste buds change and even though most programs tell you to try protein shakes before surgery, theres a strong possibility you wont like them after surgery. I use to drink a shake every morning for 2 years pre-op. The first day I was able to have shakes post-op I couldn't take 2 sips of the drink because it smelled so bad! There are a lot of sites that have samples, your best bet is to buy some and try them til you find something you like, buy a couple so you can try it pre and post op. www.wlssupplies.com has the largest sample selection on the web if you're interested (and the cheapest). good luck

There is a protein drink at this time only available at gnc of portsmouth and stratham and soon to be at all gnc's and it is delicous and if you take 6 ounces of low fat milke two and a half scoops of powder and one package of cib and fill the rest with water in a 24oz container you will get 68grams of protein and it is great. It's called maximum protein I was lucky to have walked into a store while they were having a demo but they will give you a sample anytime I love the chocolate, like the vanilla, and hate the strawberry. You can get the rest of your protein from the rest of your meals that day. But don't try it until after surgery your taste buds do change.

hi Richard, I just read your post about protein shakes. I went through so many before finding one to the consistancy I could actually tollerate and not be full after 3 sips! Nothing worse than buying those big containers of shakes and not being able to tolerate them right? couple things everyone should know about shakes.... Be sure to read the ingredients. There are certain shakes out there that are not only for nutrition, but are made for body builders (like muscle milk). Also, a human body can only absorb 30 grams of protein at one sitting. 68 grams of protein is great in a shake, but since you're not absorbing the other 38 grams unfortunatly you're wasting money (an no one likes doing that!! ) Body builders who need to eat a gram of protein per body pound obviously don't apply to the 30 grams per sitting rule since they're work outs consist of hours and hours at the gym and they burn more calories, carbs and protein in a work out than we eat in a day! lol Another good thing to know is protein shakes should be mixed right before drinking them and consumed within 20 minutes (30 max). The longer whey protein sits, the more it turns into bacteria. Heres a couple quotes from www.vitalady.com "Most people can absorb only about 30 grams at one time. Gastric bypass patients may absorb even less. The recommended "dose" is approximately 30 grams. Taking double doses won't hurt, it just costs more. We do not get the benefit of the larger dose. No one (except professional athletes) can absorb more than approximately 30 grams at one time". "The daily doses can be pre-measured dry; however, mixing the powder with liquid ahead of time can cause a loss of protein value and an accumulation of bacteria". You can ask these questions to someone at a nutrition store like vitamin world, gnc, vitamin shoppe, etc but since they're trying to sell product, you might not get the best answer. Try calling a personal trainer or even talking to someone at the desk of a local gym. most times they have great advice. good luck

Thanks Richard! I actually went to GNC the other night and found that their Pro Performance 100% Whey Protein. its actually very good! comes in Chocolate, Vanilla, Orange Cream (YUMMY!!) and strawberry. It has 30 g of Protein and 2 g of sugar. mix one scoop with 5 ounces of water (i used 1% milk). I found that the Orange Cream takes just like a creamsicle (can't help it, its a weakness of mine!)
