I am happy I found this thread I am scheduled for RNY with Dr. McBride at the end of March and I have been a little nervous since I didn't know anyone local who had been to her. I didn't realize that she had a band.

I live in Grand Island and kind of wish I knew what was going on with the support group. I had heard the one that meets at the hospital is just for gastric bypass patients, so I have not gone to that one.
Then I was invited to a support group that was was just starting I went in January and then the Feb. meeting was cancelled and haven't heard what is going on with that one. The Jan. meeting I went to was the first meeting and it was at someone's house.
If I hear of a support group that gets going I will email you.

Topic: Is there a WLS support group in Grand Island?
I am a nurse in Lincoln and have many patients from GI area. I am wondering if there is an active support group still meeting in the old Memorial hospital twice a month? If a new group has started, can someone let me know so I can let my patients know? I know Hastings and Kearney are meeting but really unsure of what Grand Island is doing at the current time. Thanks in advance for any information. Take care! Shelly

Hi Carlie,
You are invited to join us at Saint Elizabeth in Lincoln. We meet every other Tuesday evening. I also know another couple of people that live in York who attend. We have a new "Bariatric Buddy" program and if you like I can have someone from your area contact you and be a support person for you before surgery or after surgery. My # is 402-219-7638. Good Luck.

Hi Carlie, It is very important to have at least one person who is supporting you. The more people to support you the better. You can also attend support group and get lots of support there. Check with your surgeon to find a group close to you. You also have us on the Nebraska board to help you. Good luck in your journey. Mona

Topic: Support System
Can anyone let me know how much of a role your support system (family, friends, etc.) played during and after the surgery? I have a very small support system and am pretty concerned about it. I live in a rural area and am having the surgery two hours away, so if anything happens post-surgery, it could be pretty scary. Thanks!
