Topic: RE: Lap band vs. the Switch
Hi Laurie, you might check out the DS board. You can find out how they live. A duodenal switch is the most drastic of all the procedures. It works totally by malasorption. You have diarrhea and more difficulty with vitamin deficiencies. There are also other bad side effects with this surgery.  Do your research before deciding. Not many surgeons do this surgery. Good luck. Mona

Topic: Lap band vs. the Switch
Just when I was positive I wanted one, after going to my information seminar, seeing my surgeon and getting the ball rolling per insurance requirements I'm now wondering about a diff wls.   Has anyone here has the duodenal switch?  I'm thinking it sounds a little less limiting to me via the doctor visits and such, as I don't know how long I will have insurance to cover medical visits after I get to my goal weight as hopefully the weight loss will make it so that I can get off of disability and go out and have a "normal" life.  Not many places can you find good health insurance that will cover anything pre-existing.  Thus, my thoughts are turning towards the Switch.  Can anyone tell me more about THEIR experiences with this?  Special diet after the surgery, successes, problems,  side effects they have experienced, etc.  I have done some research and have started doing a pros/cons page for both the switch and the band.  Grrrr....just when you think you know something.   thanks!   Laurie

Hi Once you get a date you will recieve a packet from Dr. Forneys office. In that packet is a phone number for a place called "In Touch" It's right across the street from the hospital and it is 22.40 a night. It's not bad and people are very nice. My huband and I stayed there 3 nights when I had my surgery. Good Luck with everything.

Hi, I am sorry you are going through such a rough time. Now that the swelling has gone down, you will be able to eat more and your hunger will come back. The first fill may help with getting your appetite shut down. The walking you are doing could be building up muscle which is a  cause for the weight gain. You can thicken up your mashed potatoes. You can also try refried beans thinned with broth. Hang in there. Your appetite will get less. Call me if you want if you need further suggestions. Mona

Hi!   I haven't been banded YET!  but as I understand you will know when you have the band filled and it will make you feel fuller.  Right now your swelling has probably gone down and you are feeling "normal" in your hunger.  Keep up the walking and don't get upset.  Remember, when you start working your muscles, as in walking, you will redistribute the weight somewhat as you build muscle and lose weight.  Keep going and don't expect a miracle, you are doing great as long as you keep walking and eating right!   Hugs!

Well, I didn't really get to formally meet you but I did get to go and I am so glad that I did! Going to the seminar helped reassure me in having the lap-band procedure done and since my husband attended the seminar with me, he is also more understanding of the procedure and the lifetime changes that it requires me to make. I will be honest and say that he wasn't real thrilled about going to the seminar with me. He didn't think it was really that necessary for him to go. But I told him that I needed him to go in support for me...that even though I was the one undergoing this procedure, he would be affected by this and I just really needed him to be there to learn more about it with me. My sister had RNY done almost 5 years ago and my husband didn't like the idea of that procedure at all. So, I'll admit that at first, he was pretty reluctant in letting me talk to him about the lap-band. But he also knows the struggles that I have had, the health issues I deal with and such and because of his love and support for me, has gotten on board with this procedure. But I have to tell you the most surprising part of it all....during Dr. Holloway's speech on Living with Lap-Band, my husband actually leaned over to me and said, "Maybe this is something I should look into having this done, too." And, he also told me how other family members of mine who have even more serious health issues than what I have should possibly look into having it done. And it's not like I am wanting to set any trends at all because this procedure definitely and absolutely isn't one of those, "everybody's doing it" sort of thing....I just worry about their health and know that probably most of their health issues are caused from obesity and it scares me. It's actually out of fear for my own life and the future that I have that has brought me here. And I am so glad that there are such supportive people out there. Going to the weight loss summit definitely made a difference for me.It was SO worth it! :)
