I am not so sure that the DS has a potential for more complications than banding and bypass. Perhaps different complications but more I am not so sure. What are you basing this on?
Topic: RE: Lap band vs. the Switch
Hi Laurie,
I like you was "convinced" I had to have a band. I called a friend who I thought had a band but was told she actually had a DS and so my investigation started. Needless to say I am scheduled for DS surgery on October 3rd.
Since January I have been pouring over as much medical literature and people experience as possible to make a well informed decision. I created a list of pro's and con's and for me the DS outweighted the band or RNY.
The DS board is a wonderful source of information as is the band board and the RNY board. The DS is a more drastic surgery (the stomach is removed and the intestines are "rerouted" more than that of an RNY), but it also appears to have the least number of people looking for revisions and it has (by documented medical research) the highest percentage of weight loss AND the lowest amount of regain.
For myself, I did not get to where I am needing WLS due to my diciplined, structured eating habits, and I do not want to have more than one surgery, (I have a LOT of other reasons, but do not want to be crucified for them, so I will keep them to myself). Another reason I want a DS is so that I will be able to eat normal meals/portions with my family and not be on a "diet" for the rest of my life (been there done that, didn't work). Yes, the DS'ers have been criticized for "having their cake and eating it too".....is that really so bad? Mind you this is just my opinion, I have decided (and I am scheduled) to have a DS, for me it is the only way to go. I am also very glad to know that you will fully educate yourself and make a well informed decision prior to surgery. If you have any other questions please feel free to PM me and I will do the best I can to answer them or direct you to a long term DS'er.
I am going to Dr. Anthone, but I have heard Dr. Sudan is wonderful too. Good luck with your journey.

Hi Hazel, You have done wonderful with your weight loss. That is a great accomplishment. You can be proud of yourself for that. You can focus on things that give you pleasure and satisfaction. With all you have had to deal with, you have more than earned it. Take time for you. If you need to, get some counseling to get things figured out. Just because you are skinny doesn't mean all your problems are gone. I hope you feel better soon. Mona

Hey Hazel I know you don't know me but believe me when I tell you that I have been that low. But God doesn't give us more than we can handle and it's sounds like you must be a really strong person to have handled all this for so long. Please call a Doctor for some help. I mean that seriously I did and it was the best thing I ever did. Nothing is ever so bad it can't be fixed. I wish you well. Jill

Oh my gosh are you from Glenwood? I haven't missed a homecoming in 40 years maybe more. Is it your class reunion? What year did you graduate ? I graduated in 79. Small world. I still have kids in school one in third grade and one in seventh grade.
Did you have the lap band also?
Topic: Officially a year
It has officially been a year since my daughter has walked for taken care of herself or her children or her finances or anything else as far as that goes. It is also officially been a year that my life has been hell. I woke us at about five this morning with the thought that I have no life, all I have is resposiblities and work and expectations from everyone around me. The really scarey part was and is that I don't want to live this way anymore and I can find no way out of it, there fore I really don't want to live. I went through WLS and about died so I could have a life and I still don't have a life. Sure I am smaller and in better health, but I have no life. I had reached goal and now have put some of it back on. I know the cause, stress, insomnia and M and M's. You know that just somehow isn't right. I can't eat things that are good for me, but M and M's and Kissables go down slick as a whistle. Oh well, enough of my pity pot. Just had to vent to someone somewhere.

Oh great Jill, I was hoping things would turn around for you. Do you ever get a chance to see the homecoming parade at Glenwood? I will be in it doing my best parade wave.. Blessings

Hi Michelle, just keep sipping non carbonated liquids. You need to drink at least 64 oz. daily but drink more if you can. Go ahead and take gas x if you need it. Walking will also help with gas. You need to learn to SLOW DOWN when eating. Take a small bite of food, chew and swallow. Wait 3-4 minutes between bites. IF you are still hungry take another bite. You have to learn to recognize fullness. Stop eating when full. Good luck. Mona
