Hi Val,

Is WLS a covered benefit under your plan?  If you are unsure I would suggest that you call BCBS back and ask them for a copy of the policy, you probably received it when you first signed up for benefits.  The policy will tell you if WLS is or is not a covered benefit.  Also BCBS of MN has a website that you can log into once you sign up,  here is the their site www.bluecrossmn.com.  Once logged into their site you can query wls policy and it will come up with their protocols that you as a patient have to meet. Good luck on your wls journey

Hello everyone,

I live in California but I have BCBS of Nebraska  Does anyone know the requirements needed to have them approve you for gastric bypass?  I called ins. and they weren't very helpful, stated Dr has to get authorization.  Dr states I have to document my diet for 6 months before they can get authorization.  I was hoping this has changed.

Thanks,
Valerie

Hello everyone,  I live in California but I have blue cross blue shield of nebraska...can anyone tell me if they have used them or the requirements are for gastric bypass surgery for them?  When I call the insurance they just state that the dr.s office needs to get a authorization.  I don't want to wait that long to find out.  Pleas help.

Hi Mona, and everyone else- I think our meeting went great!!!! I sure was surprised at how many people showed up for the meeting, and not just bandsters, but several who are looking for information and in the process of approval. Mona, thanks so much for driving down to help with our start up! Dorothy

Hi Kristine, Call your insurance company and see if they have an age limit. Also ask them for the criteria needed to qualify for weight loss surgery. Each doctor has their age limits so ask the surgeon if he has an age limit. I know some doctors will do surgery on kids younger than you. You have the health risks for having surgery. They may also ask you to think about gastric banding since it doesn't reroute intestine. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Mona

I agree.  Since most insurance insist on a lot of things in order to get approval, it would be a good way to start.  Make the appointment with the surgeon and find out what you will need in order to get the surgery when you are of age.  Start going to the support meetings and prepareing for the surgery.  Do all the pre work and when you are at an age where you are eligable for it, you will be ready.  You might be surprised, your insurance might approve you now.  But you won't know unless you start the process.  Hazel

i looked within a 200 mile radius when i was 16 and 17 and insurance wouldnt approve it no way no how nor would the doctors so you might have to wait another year :( if you have insurance that covers it a lot of them make you do a 6 month diet first so you could get a jump on that if need be
