I'm getting frustrated!! In the last month i've lost maybe 2-3 pounds. That's it! I'm not sure what the deal is. I was sure I would see a loss today, but nope a gain! of 1 pound! Here's what yesterday was like: Breakfast: water(wasn't hungry) Lunch: Small Salad with a little sliced deli turkey, shredded cheese and light dressing(maybe 2 Tbsp if that) Supper: 1/2 cup Grilled Hawaiian Pork chops, 1 cup Steamed Broccoli Snack: a small piece of Colby cheese. And lots of water. Now for exercise : Went to the Y for 45 minutes of Cardio Went to the park and chased mia around for 45 minutes Went for a walk after supper for 30 minutes. So Any ideas?? I see Dr H Monday. I "think" have good restriction. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I need a little fill, not much. It's just so hard when you try very hard to follow the rules and you don't lose!! Thanks for your help! Jess 253/210/140 Stuck here!! Help!!!

Jess, Perhaps you are not getting enough protein. You may do a protein shake in the morning if you are not hungry. At least get some in. Also you are doing a fantastic job on exercise, this could be all the more reason that you need a bit more. 75-95 gms per day. Also calories per day may need to be more? I am not sure. If this continues, you may want to consult with dietician for a quick check in or email her. ( cheaper!) When was your last fill? And have you only had one fill? It may be a plateau as well. I have had a couple and they are truly frustrating. Hang in there and keep doing what you are doing. Consider trying increased protein, see if that helps. Shelly

Thanks! My Dr doesn't like us to have protein shakes. He'd rather us have solid protiein. My last fill was 3-13. I've had 4 fills.. When I asked last time about how much protein to get he told me to just eat protein first and I'll be fine. I was origionally told 45-50 gr protein by the dietician. Jess

Your doctor is full of prune juice. I'm sure he is an excellent surgeon, however I'm not sure that all surgeons are up to date on just how much protein is 'right'. I got this info from another message board, and the members there who follow this calculation and drink all their water have restarted weight loss after fairly long plateaus. There is a rule of thumb for protein grams... It is agreed upon by medical and health professionals that the body needs 1.25 grams of protein per kilogram of ideal bodyweight. DONT FREAK... as it is easy to figure. (it is ideal body weight and not current weight as fat tissue doesnt need protein, and this is not necessarily goal weight, as that tends to be an ideal 'too skinny' weight) Ideal weight divided by 2.2 Multiply by 1.25 So if you should weight 145... 145 divided by 2.2 is 66 times 1.25 equals 82 grams per day to maintain muscle mass if you are moderately active. It's hard to get that much protein from food alone, with a small tummy holding zone. People who have added a protein drink and continued eating the same amount of food have begun losing faster again. My husbands weight loss has slowed considerably, and I SWEAR it is because he isn't getting enough protein and water. His body thinks it is starving and his metabolism is adjusting accordingly. Of course,he is a guy, so he won't listen to me.... There are some EXCELLENT tasting protein powders out there, but it takes some trial and error to find them. I recommend ordering some 'sample size' packets from bariatriceating.com or wlssupplies.com That way you can try them before investing big bucks on a large jar that isn't your cup of tea. Sally

OOPSSS!!! SORRY!!!!! I had put KIDDING inside of brackets after my comment that your doctor is full of prune juice, but apparently this website deletes anything inside of the pointed brackets and the KIDDING didn't show up. My post looks awful without the KIDDING!!! after that comment. sorry about that... like I said, I'm sure he's a great surgeon, but it wouldn't hurt to TRY a protein shake for a bit and see if that works better for you. You can always go back to not using them if it was better before. Sally

Hi Sally, Every surgeon has their own requirements for their patients following wls. None are wrong, just different. Dr. Holloway feels that it keeps the pouch full for a longer period of time to eat good quality protein versus drinking protein drinks that may have added sugar and don't taste as good as hamburger or other meat. Since lap band patients absorb all the nutrients we consume, protein deficiency is not as common a problem as it is for bypass patients. You just have to do what works best for you. Mona

This is another post from another site about amounts of protein to consume, based on the calculation I posted earlier. QUOTE: If I eat three meals a day... and consume 4 ounces of a protein food in each meal... that is 28 grams a meal for a total of 84 protein grams per day. Now, if I could eat 4 ounces of chicken, eggs, fish, meat or cheese at every meal, I wouldnt need the protein drinks. I physically cannot... as most of us cannot. One ounce of a protein food contains about 7 grams of protein... so a one inch cube of cheese equals 7 grams of protein. An egg contains about 7 grams of protein. One ounce of turkey, or one deli slice contains about 7 grams of protein. So in reality, when I eat an egg for breakfast, that is only 7 grams of protein... in reality the 1/2 cup of tuna salad is 20 grams of protein... so by 2pm I only have in 27 grams total. This is when I make the decision to drink a protein supplement.... a 21 gram scoop of Protein Delite in 25 ounces of water. So I at least now have 48 grams going into supper. For example... today I am busy... had a protein pudding for breakfast... so 20 grams so far. Had some coffee... but nothing else. So I am cruising into noon, with just 20 grams of protein. Too busy to eat. I will right now assess the situation and either choose half a protein bar, a stick of jerky, or a protein drink, so at least I have 40 at my half day mark. If you are already hitting your target using just food... which would be highly unusual... you dont need the protein supplements, and the added calories are hurting you. UNQUOTE BTW this info was posted by someone who is over 4 years post-op w/RNY and who has been at goal and stayed there for several years. It obviously works for HER. YMMV of course, but when I get MY surgery I'm going to follow this plan. It's nice tho, that we all have freedom of CHOICE in these matter, and if this is something you don't choose to do, then that is certainly your business, and I wish you luck! Sally
