Hiya
My name is Janelle Im From Iowa...I go to a Informational Session at Clarkson Hospital on Feeb 21st...Then March 7th I meet with Dr McBride...And im scared & nerveous...I havent decided what surgey I want yet...I was told she does suggest what surgery she thinks...Any feed back would help & any feed back on Dr McBride too...Thanks Janelle
My husband is having rny-lap surgery on March 2nd with Dr McBride. He meets with her on Feb 16th unfortunately I won't be able to go with him for that meeting but I'll let you know what he thinks of her after his visit. Right now they have him on a very strict diet. They want him to start losing before the surgery. It has something to do with his liver. (My dr did not have me do that all drs do it differently). The gold standard of WLS is Rny and is done laprascopicly if possible. There is also Lap-band and DS type WLS. The informational Session should help you a lot on what would be the best for you and your dr will probably recommend what she thinks is best for you. Get as much info as you can. The more you know the less scary it is! There are also a lot of helpful people on this board who are futher out from there surgerys than I am and can probably give you more info.... Good Luck to you ... Sue
Hi Janelle,
Good luck with your decision. I had the lap band procedure done 18 months ago by a surgeon in Los Angeles. I moved to Omaha 3 months ago and I am now seeing Dr. McBride for follow up. I saw Dr. McBride for the first time a couple of weeks ago and found her to be very compassionate and knowledgeable. She and her PA Christa made me feel comfortable, as I was worried about finding a new surgeon.
I did not have a choice in which procedure that I had because of any underlying genetic connective tissue disorder. I have been very successful and happy with the lapband but I know many people who had the rny and have also been happy. I lost 107 ponds in 18 months.
I would recommend that you learn as much as possible about the different types of surgeries, and listen to what Dr. McBride recommends. In the end it is up to know but the more you learn, the better-informed decision you can make.
No matter which surgery you choose, you'll have to work at it. WLS is not a magic bullet but rather a tool to help you manage your eating. Through the process you'll need to relearn how to eat (you'll follow the rules for a lifetime) and how emotions effect when and why you eat. Before the surgery, I would eat to deal with stress. I'd eat until I felt better or felt numb. After surgery, at least for me, I couldn't eat enough to "fell better". When I tried, I'd just end up throwing up and feeling a whole loss worse. I've had to find other ways to deal with stress that where non-food related. The stress doesn't go away but I deal with it more effectively.
Best wishes,
Linda
Your surgeon is the one that is suppose to know what is best for you. I would certainly get a couple more opinions from other surgeons........just my opinion...there are so many different surgeries and not one fits all....that is why there are so many different ones......
Good luck to you...
