Ok...I am fairly new here, and hope to find that I am amoung friends. I finally had the nerve to discuss surgery with my doctor and he immediately said that he would set up a referral. Anyway, my question is that I was told I have to have Psych Eval, and just the name itself scares me. Can anyone tell me what it is that they are looking for? I mean if you are overweight, can they deny surgery? I have bi-polar, chronic depression, manic depression, and seasonal effects disorder, and now I am scared to be honest with them in the evaluation. I don't want my "conditions" to get me denied. I sure do hope that I am making sense here. Thanks for any help...

To put it in a nutshell Rose they are looking to see if you have reasonable expectations of this surgery and are able to understand instructions and have a willingness to follow them. Plus it does cause some stress, some people do have become depressed with the big change and it is a change. You have been through a lot but I bet there isnt a test they are going to do that you havent already been through. I would ask your mental health provider if they agree with your medical doctors referal. Good luck.. JeanB

They are really just looking to see if you are ready mentally for the surgery. If you are not ready to change your mindset about food then the surgery will not work. They want to make sure you are ready to use your new tool.
