Hi everyone. I was just wondering if any of you who have had Dr. Hung as your surgeon can give me an idea of what the recovery time in the hospital was like and if you've had any complications. Andrea

I am a patient of Dr. Hung, as of last Friday. I have not had surgery yet. I am in the process of going to see the nutrionist, psych and pulmonologist. General hospital stay is 5 days. He does not do Laps. I was the one that posted below asking about complications... no one responded. These Nebraskans are not very talkative! Dr. Hung states to me that he has had 2 leaks and no deaths. I feel like an important thing to consider is the risk of death related this surgery is similar to risks of other general surgeries (for example gall bladder or appendix) for the general population of obese people. I am very concerned about the death statistics and my family (my mother in particular, who is SKINNEY-I took after Dad) thinks I should not do this, but she would not talk me out of a different surgery if I needed it to feel better. But you must make your own decision. Dr. Hung asks his patients to buy a book that he sells wholesale from his office. If you are considering this. I also think that it is an excellent book to read. Hope that was helpful!

When you say Dr. Hung doesn't do laps do you mean he only does open RNY's and DS's or do you mean LapBand? I am thinking of getting a referral from my PCP to Dr. Hung so am also interested in anything anyone has to say about him. What book does he require you to read? Can I get it at the library?

Hi Linda & Deborah. I am actually already a patient of Dr. Hung's....I'll be having surgery in June. I've already undergone all of the preop requirements, and have just gotten ins. approval last week. As far as him not doing Lap...it means that he is not yet doing Laparoscopic RNY. He just went for training in February, but I don't believe he is actually doing the procedure yet. He stated that I could be one of his firsts if I was willing, but I'm not too sure about hat. I believe the only surgery he does currently is open RNY...I don't believe he does DS or lapband. As far as the book goes, it is called "Weight Loss Surgery: Finding The Thin Person Inside You!" I don't have the book right in front of me now, so I can't tell you the author, but it's a really great book...written by a WLS patient. Very informative and helpful. It cost $20 at Dr. Hung's office...not sure if it's available at the library or not. If either of you have any questions for me, I'd be happy to help you out. I went to the preop support group in February, and got a lot of info there too. lf you haven't gone yet, I highly recomend it. You can read my profile for more info if you'd like. Andrea

I thought that Dr. Hung's offic said that he was going to a seminar this summer to learn laps. I would agree. I do not want to be his first lap. I think that this is very delicate surgery, being open may help? Get a better look at things? Touch, feel and see...The book "Weight loss Surgery" also says that laps are about $5000 more expensive, a surprise to me. I met with the nutrionist yesterday. It was very imformative. At first I wondered why? Thought it was just one of those hoops to jump through. But, I see a definate purpose for it. I will go for psych eval and pulmonologist next week. I will go to the pre op support group April 1. The nutrionist states that they have people come that have had good experiences as well as those that had complications. I was thinking of taking my mom, she is not really for this, but if someone came with complications, then she couldn't handle that. I could deal with complications, just not DEATH! Then wait for insurance approval. Any suggestions Andrea? I am hoping for surgery in May. I have 4 kids and thought it might be easier while they are in school.

I called Dr. Hung's office 10 days after my initial appt to check if stuff was sent to the insurance company. Lisa was TOO Busy and had not sent it in!!!!! I will see her tomorrow at the support group. I hope that she has found the time to fax it. I have now seen the nutritionist, psych eval done and "passed" and seeing pulmonologist tomorrow ( I don't have concerns). Just waiting on them to send to insurance company now!

I had surgery on March 2, 2004. I was able to return to work six weeks later. I was one of his "leaks". I had to have emergency surgery on March 7, 2004 to repair a leak. I came home from the hospital on March 19, 2004. I was supposed to come home on the 6th though. I work in a jail so I had to wait the full six weeks to return to work. Most people don't have to wait that long. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.
