https://www.dakotaclinic.com/Locations/ParkRapids/Index.aspx  See the phone number on this website to call? Call the clinic and ask for Barb. She's the person that signs people up for the informational session. I also had it done in Park Rapids, and live in Fargo. I highly recommend it over Meritcare. Meritcare is great is some areas, but not in the bariatric department. By the way, you can have the surgery where you want. Talk to your insurance company to see what your options are that stay within your network. Since Park Rapids is affiliated with Innovis, it was in my network so I didn't have to go to Meritcare.

Investagate Park Rapids hospital here on OH.... Its St. Jospeh Hospital in Park Rapids. its about 1  1/2 hours away from Fargo. I am headed that way on Thursday  with a niece that is attending their informational meeting. She will most likely have her surgery in July. Give them a look at at their website.  They are wonderful there. Do you have to go to Meritcare? Peggysue

Hello there,

I am from Fargo and traveled to Park Rapids, Mn for my RNY, with Dr. Smith, my insurance would not cover any of the hospitals here in Fargo, My insurance required a "center of excellence", and Meritcare did not have it ... I went to the informational meeting at Park Rapids, in April, did all of my required insurance demands and had my surgery  in July. In less than 3 months. My 2 sisters   and brother all had  WLS surgery  at Park Rapids with the same results. Meritcare strings you along for about 1 year and the education for WLS is  not there. I have lost 100 pounds and attend a monthly support group at Innovis on University ave and have no problems, doing wonderful... Peggysue

For me it was easy I had friend and family that had problems with gastric so I wasn't interested in that option at all.  I haven't been banded yet but have done a LOT of research on it so that I knew what I was getting myself into.  For me there were a lot of benefits for the lap-band.  I like the fact that I have surgery on Thursday and should be able to return to work on Monday.  The short recovery time was a big factor and the other was that it can be adjusted. From what I’ve heard most of the time the fills aren't too painful.  The needle is actually a very fine needle.   I went to my PCP the middle of Feb and met with my surgeon on Fed 22.  On March 3 I went for my nut classes and psyc evaluation.  I had to x-rays of my knees on March 6th to show the problems I was having with my knees. On the 7th my papers were submitted to BCBS I called them the following Friday and was told that they needed more information on my past weight lose programs.  That was sent to them on Monday and on March 28th I was approved.  I am schedule for surgery on the 17th of March.  I would have gone the 10th but I needed to be on a 2 week liquid/protein diet.  It went a lot faster then I had expected.  I thought that BCBS would actually deny me and then I would have to start the appeal process, but I was lucky enough to be approved the first time. I hope that I answered some of you questions.  As for which surgery is right for you I really thing you just have to do the research and find out which one will fit into your life the best.
