Topic: Lap band rumor mill.....
My surgeon in Grand Forks really pushed me to get the lap band but I have decided on the rny, of course I know myself better than anyone, right? Anyhow, someone from my little town told me that Merit Care in Fargo doesn't plan on continuing doing them. Does anyone know if this is true? I have someone interested in it but that doesn't seem like a positive bit of information......

Lisey,
You're not flying into Phoenix and driving to your destination in Mexico, are you? Part of my job at work is to research dangerous places where we don't want employees to go to, and the information I get is about the cities just on the other side of points of entry in the US.
Driving through El Paso is the worst, right now, but driving through from Arizona and California is full of warnings as well. The issue is the drug cartels are doing kidnappings/hostage takings and robberies of Americans who come through as well as European tourists. Much of this is retaliation for the extensive security at the US border not letting the drugs and dealers come through, cutting off their revenue stream. I hated to mention this to you, but its a real issue you need to be aware of. The US State Department has a warning out at the colleges and universities for the spring break crowd at the resorts in Mexico. I know a couple of people who have just come back and said the resorts are well protected, it can be getting too and from the airport and into the villages surrounding them that are questionable. Check with your local contact at the doctors office to see if they can advise of any precautions you should take.
I thought I would edit this to add a link http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3028.html this was added by the State Dept on 2/20/09

Topic: RE: Who was/is your shining star?
Oh my gosh, my journey started so long before I actually got to have surgery due to my denial, appeal, denial, give up, re-apply, and get approved - I think that part took over a year.
To me, I have a friend who had surgery (open RNY) 5 years ago, and she had done so well with it. Then another friend had surgery here (first friend lives in another state) and that friend was also an inspiration to me.
To see the success of those two people motivated me that "I" can do this and be successful. Support from wherever I can get it is very important to ME. I have met some lovely people at the Support Group meetings, and having someone to discuss vitamins, and protein, etc. etc. is very important for my success.
While my husband didn't necessarily think I needed to have this surgery (I had just recovered from a different major operation when this approval came through), he did support my decision to do it. Since surgery, he has been wonderful. He has been very important in this journey.....I still like to go out to eat, and lord knows I don't eat my share of a meal, but he never complains and always lets me order what "I" want to eat at a restaurant, then he shares the meal with me.
Good question Kelly.

Thanks Judi! Yes, it was a nice break from the winter......now back to work for me tomorrow as we head into a software/hardware upgrade for this weekend. I didn't even think about work while I was gone, but I knew I would pay when I got back this next week.
Sad thing is I was still cold at night...this body temp of mine is all whacked.

Topic: RE: I am back from Mexico...
Interesting you should ask....this is my 4th trip to Mexico, the 3rd since 2004. This is the first year I have observed the following:
1. Play Del Carmen - shopping for a late afternoon/evening. We saw what appeared to be a mexican army truck driving through the streets with semi-automatic weapons. That kind of freaked me out, but never felt unsafe.
2. Taxi ride to Playa - on the highway, there were checkpoints that people had to stop at. It was the "Policio" - police officers holding what my DH said were semi-automatic weapons - not like the handguns we see our police carry. We were fine - but we talked to some people at the resort who got into Cancun late at night, so there transportation to the resort was at 2:00 a.m. They were pulled over by the cops or someone and all of their things gone through. They were fine and were told by their driver they were likely looking for drugs.
Aside from that, I noticed nothing and felt completely safe. It is very apparent that these businesses in mexico are doing all they can do to keep the tourists safe, as that is the bread and butter of this country. We didn't leave the resort much, but when we did, there was security at the entrance/exit of the resort and everyone had to be checked in and out (via room number).
Where in Mexico are you going, and when is your surgery? Yes, it was pretty warm (80-85 degrees) but whimpy me was still cold at night. Since losing weight, I just can't get a handle on my body temperature.

Topic: RE: Finally got MeritCare's surgery price quote for DS

Everyone should have confidence in their surgeon, which is why I chose mine after extensive research of the programs available. I also agree that experience is key. I learned my surgeon has had a tremendous outcome for his long roster of patients due to his knowledge and expertise in the lap procedure. I saw a statistical presentation of his patient outcomes that he presented at a national baratric conference, and compared it to other data that was out there for ND. That worked for me. I know some people still acquaint age with experience rather than experience with expertise. I have to do this type of research in my day to day job, and just applied the same logic to researching this surgery before I had it done. I admit I was a bit more picky when it came to something that impacted me, personally, or other family members who were looking into it.
I do believe there are a number of surgeons who might have less experience, which is why you likely heard what you did from the staff at MC about dr's who do to much too fast. I also talked to staff at the hospital where I had it done, and I was suprised to hear how many of them actually had the lap RNY themselves by my same doctor. They had great outcomes and were walking endorsements of good health, which is the reason we all get this done.
Lisey, this is your thread, and now you have two examples of two different procedures, open RNY and Lap RNY, of which we both had great results.
