Topic: RE: any one had Dr Helbling for surgery
For me it was a no brainner. You have to know in your heart which one is for you. For me it was RNY because it would give me some restrictions so I would feel the full, maybe get sick on bad foods (ok, so that hasn't happened). I needed it to be as structured for me as I am about life. I am a very routine person.

I did research all options and made a pros and con list. The final came down to the fact that what I read/listened to etc.. was that there are/were many problems with the band as far as staying in place, working for many years etc... I guess I just was not into having things go wrong after surgery. Mind you with any surgery things can and do go wrong, nothing is perfect.

I have an issue with foreign objects being placed into bodies and then the body rejecting the object because it doesn't really belong there. That was my top reason for not getting the band along with the reason IF the band went bad and I had to have it replaced, I would of had to then had the RNY, so why the extra steps LOL, get it over with the first time. Besides if it went bad and I wanted/needed a revision- insurance usually doesn't pick up the tab it is out of your pocket. Most policies say "once in a life time" They really mean that LOL

I hope this helped you. Please do research and make up YOUR own mind! This is a very important choice you need to make for your health.

Best of luck keep us posted

Thank you Sandy!  I'm getting pretty excited about it, though am also sad that it has caused a rift in my friendship with one of my closest friends.  I'll post when I'm out of surgery if I have internet access down there (I'm not planning on taking my lap top), otherwise I will post when I get back to Milwaukee - I'm staying with my family there for another week before coming home to ND since I don't have anyone to rely on up here if I need any assistance with anything.  What really sucks is I need to move May 1st, but am having this as an open procedure, so will be on weight restrictions.  My plan is to get as much packed as possible before I go down there & then hire help to move.

Sorry,
I have not heard of them. Have you looked up their profiles on OH? Sometimes that is helpful.
Best of luck

Kelly....I love reading your posts.  You are so interesting and have such a great sense of humor.  You are someone I'd really like to meet.  Maybe someday that could happen.  I am 3 1/2 months out and consider myself A WORK IN PROGRESS.  I have lost 65 pounds, a total of 51 inches and have 44 pounds to lose and I'm hoping to do it by mid-summer.  I feel so dang much better physically AND emotionally too.  What a RIDE it's been so far.

Keep Posting Friend,

Sandy

Oh my gosh Kelly....What a nice post.  I guess I have several shining stars and the first would be my husband.  Both my children (ages 44 & 41....) and the gals in my sorority group who have given me encouragement all along and are so happy for me. Like others, I also have a few people that have acted differently towards me since WLS and I expected that from the start.  People are leery of something they do not understand  and that is human nature. I have found support from all of the wonderful people here on OH .  There is no local support group here in Williston.  There was one a few years ago and it fell by the wayside, for what reasons I do not know so I look to all of you wonderful people here and on my Over age 50 forum.  I would love to visit a North Dakota support meeting sometime and perhaps one day I will get the chance.

Hugs to all  my LOSER friends and those contemplating WLS also.

I'm arriving on a Mon evening, surgery's on Tue.  I'll be in the hospital 4 days, going back to the hotel.  The dr's private nurse comes over daily to check & care on you (change bandages, showering if you need help, etc).  I'll be leaving the following Thurs.  All & all, I'll be down there 10 days.

Sounds like they've got a great set up there, to minimize any issues for you. I bet you're excited! Can't wait to hear how it all goes for you. How long will you be in the hospital for that procedure and do you go back to the hotel until you're ready to travel back?
