Wow! I feel great and it is only three days post op. I don't know that I ever had any real pain. They kept me on the norphine in the hospital so if there was pain I didn't feel it. Now I'm home and not taking the medicine and am ok. I didn't even get the horrible gas pains I expected. That is not to say I don't have gas - I surely do!!! But it isn't painful, just a discomfort. Walking helps.

I went to the Mall today to walk. It is too hot outside to walk in my neighborhood. Anyway, my husband got something to eat at the food court and I wanted some. I guess that is the psychological or emotional food cravings. I sure as heck am not hungry physically. Did this happen to any of you?

When I got out of the hospital I had gained three pounds. I figure that is just from all the swelling. What do you think?

Anyway, thanks for the support North Carolinians. I appreciated it!

I just started reading the book and I have to say at first it just seems out there. I mean it says tell urself that you don't need to eat ( kinda) and you won't. Well, I put it to practice and it does actually help. I like to do my kitchen chores before I have my protein tea in the mornings and it's usually on my mind to grab something I shouldn't for a quick bite like a cracker from my baby's snack bowl. Well, today I had these thoughts too, but have been able to quiet them without issues! My tummy is grumbling but my brain seems to be getting the point and is leaving me alone! I like this feeling.... Lol.

I'm going to call tomorrow.  I had my surgery done at Nash in Rocky Mount, not Duke.  I don't think waiting until tomorrow will hurt anything. I feel other than the pain.  Thanks for the advice.

Why don't you call your surgeon just to be on the safe side and to ease your mind? (and mine too) I don't know who did your surgery but with Duke you can always call the hospital and speak to the bariatric surgeon on duty. I'm sure every program is similar.

Topic: Ten Days Post-Op and in Pain
Hi, everyone.  I had my surgery on May 26, and I'm doing very well.  I went back to work just 5 days after surgery (I teach at a community college) and did amazingly well.  I haven't had any problems following the liquid diet, and I'm feeling pretty good.  I can see my ankles again!  However, Thursday night, I was in bed and turned on my left side to reach something on my nightstand.  As I stretched and pulled on the left side of my body, I felt a horrible stabbing burning pain, so I stopped that!  Since then, I've been having that burning, stabbing pain more frequently.  It's only when I move a certain way, but it's getting so it happens when I get up and down out of chairs now.  I have my two week post-op checkup with my surgeon on Wednesday, and I'm trying not to worry too much. I knew to expect more pain on the left side and that it would take a while for that to ease, but this seems worse and perhaps getting worse than it was. I'm taking liquid Tylenol for the pain, and I'm going to try to take it regularly, every 4 hours today.  Has anyone else felt this?  I guess I'm worrying after all.  Thanks.

Good Morning!

It looks like a beautiful day and I've decided to start it with one of my favorite, indulgent breakfasts; I love cheese pancakes and this time of year they are really great with fresh berries.

This evening I'm planning to go view a friend's art show and am looking forward to wearing a dress I found during a second hand shopping trip. The dress is looks great, but it's sleeveless. I normally shy away from sleeveless because my arms are not my best feature. That said, the cut of the dress is really flattering and it makes me feel beautiful and I've decided to try to be a little less 'critical' about what my arms look like and try to enjoy the positives.

What do you have planned for today?

Since the VSG is restrictive only procedure you won't have 'the early push' that comes with malabsorbtive procedures. That said, your early progress is good and is likely to continue as you continue to maintain a restrictive diet. Believe it or not, often pureed and solid food diets do not contain more calories than liquid only, so you are likely to still continue to loose at a pretty good clip. I really do know that 129 lbs is a lot to lose, but you are nearly what is considered a 'light weight.' I lost a total of about 130 to 135 lbs and it took me about 16 months to lose it.

Wishing you all the best,

Hi Cindy,

If you tell me a day/time that works for you, I'll make it happen. I may be able to schedule a meetup with multiple people or it might just be good ol' me, but either way do not feel as though there is no one there... We're here. You are not the first and will not be the last to have this issue. It is manageable. While losing weight after you have lost the push from malasorbtion does take more work than it did right after surgery it really is doable. I've done it and will be glad to share some my 'tricks of the trade.'

Re: the 5 Day Pouch Test, while I have never done it, I know others that have and have had success with it. If you go to the 'Grads' forum there are often folks there that swear by it as a way to get back on track. You also might consider visiting the 'Back On Track Together' forum. To be honest, it's much more active than this one and there are a lot of folks dealing the same issues you are facing. That doesn't mean I don't want to see plenty of you here... I DO!, but these may provide some of the direct support you are needing at this time.

It is 'possible' that you have 'stretched' either your pouch or the stoma leading away from it, but to be honest, most often it's that you are 'eating around it' and there are ways to get back on track so that you are 'leveraging' the power of the pouch you have. There are a couple of things you can do to 'check' the volume of your pouch without having to have medical tests run. One is to take a container of low fat cottage cheese. Measure out 5 2-ounce portions (or 1/4 c) and eat it slowly... about 20 minutes without anything to drink 30 minutes before or during the 'test'. Once you feel full, you will be able to tell approximately how much your pouch can hold. Most people find that their pouch will hold somewhere between about 5 to 10 ounces when they have reached 'maintenance.' It's important that you go slowly so that you give your body time to signal your head that you are full and to stay away from fluids so that you don't 'wash' the 'solid' food through the stoma by essentially 'liquifying' it.

Hang in there my friend,

I had the VSG surgery.  It was under my profile before but somehow it has disappeared and I can't figure out how to get it to show on again.  And I have plently of weight to lose.

Thanks for the information.  I know it will be a long process.  I just started introducing puree food this week.  So I figure my weight loss will slow down some since it was strictly liquids the first two weeks.

First of all .....RELAX.....if you can. Now, I am willing to bet your pouch is not stretched. Although you can eat more comfortably than early out; it's just because its all healed. You can take the regained weight off again and it will be easier than it is without the surgery, but it will take a little longer and a little more effort. I am working to get off a little bounce back weight and it is going slower but it is happening. I am wearing a bodybugg to monitor my calorie burn and I am trying to stay as active as I can. I am not in gym classes during the summer because I am moving out of state and so I have to make sure I am doing something that makes me move everyday. Of course getting ready for the move is helping a little with that. I am making sure I get my protein in and I am staying low carb. I avoid pasta, rice and potatoes. And I avoid sugars even though I am not a dumper. I have lost about 8 pounds since March this way.
What I am trying to say is that you still have your tool and it still works but it takes some effort. A little resolve to do it is what works in the end. Good luck to you.
