Considering WLS
I'm from New Bern, but will be having my surgery (VSG) in Mooresville because I'm self pay. I've heard good things about both. I know Greensboro has an excellent surgeon. I would think The Surgeons at Duke are just as good. In my opinion Duke has the better facilities, especially to respond to potential complications. Hope this helps a little as the NC OH Message Boards are dead and do not have much activity.

My surgery is upcoming (10/10). My dr is from the Duke group. My recommendation at this moment is to try the Durham office over the Raleigh one. I have had to push this thing through myself. My partner is having WLS too and has had the same experience (phone calls not returned, schedules messed up, pre-op package not complete). I still feel confident in my surgeon based on his reputation. The office staff seems sweet but they are not very efficient.
I had my original consult at the Raleigh Duke office, but my Dr told me he could get me to surgery sooner @ the Durham office, so all my procedures/visits will be in the Durham. The Raleigh office took FOREVER to contact me after submitting the health questionnaire online, then 4 weeks to schedule the initial consult, then they had to reschedule my initial consult for 3 weeks later. So it took about 3 months to get an initial consult appt. Then it took 6 weeks after the initial consult to get a EGD appt. I hope the surgery is scheduled faster....LOL all this waiting us driving me nuts...LOL
I have UHC in NC (California policy). I had the DS this past Friday and it was covered (at least the pre-approval said it was). The usual caveats applies (weight and co-morbidities) + a "demonstrated weight loss attempt of at least 6 months". I went to the doctor for 4 and then had the surgeon submit those records along with 6 months of weigh****chers and they approved on the first pass. Not sure about you but I was at 44.8 BMI with all of the fat diseases - high blood pressure, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, borderline diabetic.
Good luck.

I had my surgery at UNC and I loved them! They walked me through every step and were nicer than any I have ever worked with. I started talking to the people at Duke first as I live in Durham but I felt like I was just a number in their system.
