Hi All ... last week my physician says "why not have gastric bypass" - I had thought about it a couple years ago and am now thinking it over again.  So I'm doing lots of reading and research.  I know I want to go through Duke and have the surgery at Durham Regional - just wondering if any of ya'll have recommendation for preferred surgeon?  I haven't found much info on the indiividual surgeons, but in a lot of what I have read, if the surgery is done right and I follow dietary rules then success is higher so I want to ensure I get the right doc.  Thanks in advance.  Melissa

I am scheduled for RNY at Durham Regional with Dr. Alfonso Torquati on March 12th.  I have heard he is really good.  A girl in my office used him and she has had wonderful results.

Hi!! I had my RNY surgery at Durham Regional two weeks ago and my surgeon was Dr.  Sudan. He was very nice but I hardly ever saw him. I saw his resident and his nurse far more often. It was a very good experience and I have had no complications. :)

I myself was scheduled to have my RNY done last November with Dr. Torquati , however my insurance at the time denied me for it. Since then I have different insurance and have decided to get the sleeve instead. I meet with Dr. Torquati next week. My question is has anyone gotten "sleeved" by him or know someone that has??? Thanks in advance

I had surgery last year with Dr. Portienier. He is very good but I didn't see him before nor after the surgery. You see his associates. They are all very nice and he is very good. I have recently changed to Duke Raleigh and I see Dr. Yoo. He works in Durham and Raleigh. He is great and I have seen him a couple times. He performed RNY on my good friend 3 months ago and she did great. I hope this helps.

Hi Melissa,

I will be having surgery at Rex in Raleigh, end of April or first of May, with Dr Ng.  I love the Rex Surgical team. All of the staff is very helpful and I can ask any questions I want by email......

The WLS doctors come to all the Informational and Support meeting and they are held at Rex on Blue Ridge Rd.

Hope that helps!

I had my surgery with Dr. Ng on 1/18/12.  I agree that the Rex Bariatrics team is awesome!

Melissa,

All of the surgeon's at Duke are exceedingly competent, so no matter who you have you will be in good hands. I have met Dr. Portenier and think highly of him; he has a good bedside manner and is great at communicating with his patients. I also know Dr. Yoo and think well of him. He practices at both the Durham and Raleigh facilities. While I don't know the other surgeon's at Duke, I do know that they are all very competent.

Wishing you all the best,

Barbara

I went through Duke as well and had Dr. Portenier. Like the person above said, you won't see much of him, but the people you will see are very, very nice. I've never had a complaint with the practitioners I've seen. Good luck! It'll be great!
