How much did you have to lose before surgery?

Just curious... How much did your surgeon require that you lose before he/she would perform surgery?  My surgeon has not stated yet the exact amount, other than they just want me to lose weight.  Just to clarify, I am on the "pre-pre-surgery" diet.   1500 calories a day.

I go in for surgery on 8/29. I was required by my insurance to loose 10+ pounds. And you are lucky. my caloric intake has been roughly 1200 a day since March. I know I am getting less because I have been getting physically hungry in the evening. Yes it is actual hunger and not head hunger- cuz my tummy will growl. THank goodness for ice and crystal light. LOL

I didn't have to lose any weight prior to surgery but my doctor strongly recommended it. He wanted my liver to be as small as possible.

I lost about 25 pounds before surgery!  My doctor also want me to get my liver down as small as possible!  I think lots of times, they want you to try to loose as much weight as you can before surgery, just to see how commited you are....(just my opinion)...LOL!!!   But I do know medically, they want you liver as small as possible, makes the surgery less complicated!

Good luck on your weight loss journey!

How do you like Dr Stephanidis (sp??)  He did the seminar I went to and he was funny!  Dr Kuwada is going to do my surgery at the recommendation of my regular doctor but I really liked Dr Stephanisis' personality!

So true on the liver thing. THe way my surgeon explained it to me is- the fattier the liver the more slippery it is in there and that can cause unneeded accidents and *gulp* mistakes to happen.

I wasn't given an amount to lose before surgery and didn't have to do a pre-surgery diet. That said, I had already decided to move my weight south and had started doing a South Beach style diet. I lost about 15 lbs from the time I first met my Dr and the time I had my surgery, but this was not a requirement.

Many Dr's want patients to go on diet because it helps to reduce the size of the liver and makes surgery easier and safer. We lose weight from the liver first, causing it to reduce in size.

My surgeon just recommended losing as much weight as possible (he said with every 10 lbs lost before surgery the easier the recovery).  He didn't give me a certain number that I HAD to lose before surgery.  I am at pretty much the same weight now as I was in May...but I am glad I haven't gained.  I am a little ashamed to say it took actually getting my surgery date before I started taking seriously trying to lose some weight...

I will have to do a liquid protein diet 2 weeks prior to surgery to help shrink the liver.  Not sure if everyone has to do the same or not.

Good luck to you!
