Question for any Duke WLS Center Patients

I've read that you get a catheter during RNY surgery so you don't have to get up & down to go to the bathroom as much after the surgery.  Is this what you experienced if you had your surgery done at Durham Regional Hospital thru the Duke WLS Center ?  I've read different things on this website so I just wanted to ask so I'll know what to expect for my surgery on 3/2.

Thanks

I just had RNY surgery on the 1st. and I had a catheter the first night. They took it out early the next morning. It wasn't bad at all.

While I think it is standard practice and I recall having it, as did my husband, please be sure to ask them when you go in for your pre-op appointment. They'll be glad to walk you through what to expect and answer questions you may have.

Thanks everyone!  I'll be sure to ask any and all questions at my pre-op appt coming up.  I appreciate your support and willingness to answer my questions.

Thanks again

Did all of you go to Duke. How is the facility. I need a revison and just move from Texas and need a good recommendation for a doctor. Any suggestions?

I went to Duke for my surgery and was pleased with the whole experience. The staff was nice the room was clean the nurses were great. I would recommend them.

As far as doctors, I had Dr Pryor. I'm not sure if she does revisions or not. I guess I wasn't looking for that at the time so I never paid any attention. If she doesn't do it, there are other doctors at the Duke Weight Loss Clinic that I'm sure does. However, if she does do revisions I would schedule an appt with her, she's a great surgeon.

Good luck

I had surgery 4 1/2 years ago at Durham Regional (first surgery ever) and I had a catheter. I kept feeling like I had to go potty so I told them to remove it.

The one noticeable thing was for months afterwards, I had no 'sensation' to go potty. I could hours without going potty. I would realize late in the afternoon that I had not been to the bathroom in a while. I would try to go and the flood gates would open!

Worked out great when I was out running errands all day.

Like Barb said, definitely ask your doctors all these questions as well. I used to keep a notebook and write down my questions as I thought of them. We can tell you our experiences but it is best to hear it right from the source to hold them accountable if need be.

Hope all goes well!
