Where to find reasonably priced vitamins for RNY patients?

Hi All,

The Dietician at the Duke program gave me a somewhat lengthy list of vitamins that I will need to take since I'm having RNY surgery. I was just wondering if anyone else has been advised to do the same, and if so, if there are any particular places that you recommend to buy reasonably priced vitamins. Any suggestions/recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks.

Lisa

I took the Twin lab calcium citrate chewable from the vitamin shoppe.  I ordered online and they were much cheaper.  I was told to do the tums but they are calcium carbonate.  Always get the Calcium citrate.  At about 4-6 weeks I started taking citracal which is calcium citrate + vitamin D3.

My clinic recommended flinstones complete or centrum chewables.  The centrum chewables are better for you and you can find them on sale at rite aid and CVS sometimes buy 1 get 1  50% off.

Iron I was told to get slow FE but I cannot take so I am taking Perfect iron by Sundown and it is much easier on my stomach and they say gastric bypass patients can absorb it better.

You can really get into some expensive vitamins when you get from Bariatric Advantage and celebrate

I take Centrum Silver, because I can't take iron.

I also take Citrical w/D and prefer to take the petites because they go down easier. Just make sure that when you are taking calcium that you are getting calcium citrate because it absorbs better.

I take a sublingual B12.

Finally, I take a D3.

I try to get most of my vitamins on sale and use coupons as much as possible. I normally get mine at the drug store.

Some purchase theirs through specialty stores or through shops like the Vitamin Shoppe or GNC. I find that generally they are more expensive, but are a good resource when you need something that is specialized. I did use Centrum Chewables right after surgery, but switched over to the tables within a few weeks.

I know that Bariatric Advantage and Celebrate have lines of vitamins that are formulated for bariatric patients. This isn't an area of expertise for me, but if you look up user AndreaU, she has done a great deal of research on the various vitamins and the different vendors.

Hi.

First question -- chewables or pills?

I am lazy about figuring out what vitamins to take so I use the celebrate line chewables. I take the multi for RNY flavored chewables. I also take the non chewable iron (turns out it is the right kind of iron - corbonal??). I do save money taking the sublinqual B-12 Naturemade cherry flavor instead of the celebrate B-12. I also take the chewable D3s from the same naturemade brand but am taking a tablet twice a day of D3 5000 units as well. I think I am covering all my bases and I will find out in a couple of months when I can get some labs done.
