GallBladder Surgery years after RNY

Has anyone had gallbladder surgery years after RNY?  I had RNY about  5 years ago, but was just recently diagnosed with gallbladder problems.  I had my gallbladder removed two days ago.  I thought that the surgery would be a piece of cake compared to the RNY but when I woke up from surgery, I was in a tremendous amount of pain - much more pain than when I had RNY.  Has anyone else had this experience?  The doctor said that I had adhesions and scar tissue from the RNY and from my hysterectomy, so maybe that is why this particular surgery was so rough, but I am not sure.  Can anyone share with me their experience with gallbladder surgery?

Hi Gwen,

I had laproscopic gallbladder surgery about 16 years ago, following the birth of my daughter Sarah and I have to say that I found it to be a much more difficult recovery than my RNY. They thought mine might have been more difficult because I was up and down all of the time nursing a baby and not taking pain meds, but I was expecting the RNY to be tougher than it was because of my gall bladder surgery experience.

I'm hoping that your recovery improves soon.

Hi Gwen - i had my gallbladder removed last year which was about a year and a half after my RNY.  Both surgeries were done laparascopically, but I agree with you and Barb in that my RNY was much easier.  I'm not sure about what all was moved around in the gallbladder surgery, but I think a big difference was that my RNY was planned for and the pain meds were explained to me in great detail before the surgery.  As it turns out, unbeknownst to me I was taking pain meds every 4 hours (as is normal), but they were just half doses!  So I could have been taking them every two hours, but I didn't know that.  Oh well - I lived, but it definitely made me appreciate the qualityof my care after the RNY.  Good luck!

Thank you Barb and Rhonda.  Hearing about your experience makes me feel better.  I was beginning to think that I was a wimp.  I am trying to wean myself off my pain meds because my supervisor is expecting me to return to work on Monday.  I really don't feel up to it just yet.  I am still very sore.  When I called my doctor's office, they suggested that I wait until my follow-up appointment (which is Thursday).  I'm not sure what to do.  I feel pressured to go in on Monday so that my job won't be in jeapordy, but I am not feeling that great just yet.

Thanks again for sharing your experiences with me.
