Kinda Hungry!

Hey everyone! So far, so good. I just noticed that I was starting to get a little hungry today for the first time. I'm still on the liquid phase. Today I tried strained cream of mushroom soup that was really good, hit the spot. Im also trying to stay up on my protein, Boost shakes. Pocicles, broth, crystal light, that's been my diet.
But I've found that instead of being full on the 2 oz protein and the 3 oz liquid every hour, it's more like I need 2 oz protein and 6 oz liquid every hour. Is this normal?

Also, I have not had a BM yet. Surgery was on Monday. Should I be concerned about this? I have passed gas. Kind of a gross question, I know, but thanks for your help!

I am certainly no expert since I just had my surgery one week before you, but I can tell you that the hunger is probably a lot in your head.  I just feel like I need to eat something, because that is what I have been used to all my life.  The liquid does not really fill me up either, but I have read a few posts that say it is not really supposed to because it basically runs through you and never really stays in your pouch.

It took several days for a BM, they actually told me at the hospital it could take up to two weeks, so I was not too concerned about that.  I think the most important thing right now is to be sure we are getting the protein and fluids recommended daily.

I could not stand protein shakes after my surgery, and I finally ordered some Nectar protein.  I really like that and am getting a lot more protein this week, and I really feel like I have a lot more energy.  Sounds like you are doing everything right, so keep it up!

Thanks! That actually helps A LOT! I was getting worried! What other kinds of liquids are you trying? When do you go back for your three week appointment?

The main liquids I am doing are the Nectar mixed with water and either plain water or Crystal Light.  Sometimes I will do some soup, but that is about it.  And the SF popsicles, I do love those!

I go back on April 20th, how about you?

I was not hungry feeling for a ehile after surgery but I did feel like I wanted to drink something that was not sweet and tasted like food. I went to Panera and got their Veggie soup and asked for more liquid than veggies, they were happy to do it. Then I strained it through a wire strainer. It taste just like having a meal and satisfied the salty cravings.
Now I had 2 oz protein and a total of 6 oz other liquids in and hour. It was 2oz every 15 minutes, so that left no real time to want anything.
Hope this helps, good luck

If I recall properly from my own experience and that of my husband's, I think that we were taking in 2 ounces of protein every 15 minutes we were awake, plus back-filling with as close to 64 ounces of clear fluids as possible, so i think that you are probably on track with your intake. That said, feel free to contact Patrick or anyone else at Duke WLS to be sure that you are on track if you have any questions or concerns.

The amount of time it takes to create a BM really does vary quite a bit from one person to another, but remember that you don't have much going in, so you won't have much coming out for a while. As you begin to have a more 'solid' diet, that will change and improve.

It's also very normal to have quite a bit of gas following surgery because they literally pump you full of it during surgery so that they can see what they are doing and it takes a while for it to dissipate.  Walking will help some.

Congratulations on making it to the Loser's Bench!
