Getting to know you better
This used to be a very active, interactive and supportive board. Over the past few months it seems as though we have had quite a turn over, losing many old timers and gaining some newbies. It seems that we don't really know one another very well, so I thought I'd try doing this getting to you thread once in a while to see if we can do just that... Get to know one another.
It's important to have the support as you approach WLS and during your first year, but it's also important to maintain support as we move further out. I look forward to getting to know you.
Here the first list:

What is your favorite WLS friendly snack?
Hmmm... That changes. In the beginning, I was hooked on Wendy's chili and then sort of got tired of it. I love cheeses, but have to be careful since they are high in fats and I had an RNY instead of DS ;-)... I make a mean dip that is WLS friendly and love that. Deviled eggs are great for me. I use creamed cottage cheese instead of mayo and the rest of the recipe is normal... It makes a great, satisfying snack that doesn't blow me out of the water. I couldn't really handle deviled eggs very well during the first 6 month though.
Last movie you saw in a movie theater?
Love Happens with Jennifer Anniston. I plan to go see 'It's Complicated' with some friends from my support group between Christmas and New Years.
Do you have a BFF?
I have a bunch... One for this, one for that... Some of my oldest, dearest friends are still in CA. One is my sister-in-law, Norma who is more like a blood sister to me. One is my best friend Karen. I helped to deliver all three of her children and she was there when I delivered my daughter, Sarah. I have several best friends here in NC: Lisa is a friend from here on OH... One of many blessings this journey has bestowed on me and another is my friend Donna who I knew before this journey and who embarked on her own WLS journey this year.... Yet another thing we share. I'm lucky that I'm friends with my daughter... I'm her mother first, but I imagine that as she becomes a woman, we'll move into that wonderful, wonder filled friendship unique to mothers and their daughters.
What is your favorite time of day?
Early morning and late evening when the house is relatively quiet.
What is your favorite way to relax?
A good massage.
How much H20 do you drink a day?
To be honest, I'm pretty bad about this. I was really good about managing my fluid intake when I was losing, but I"m not as good about it now and it's something I could work on.
What is your biggest struggle?
Managing stress and not using carbs to comfort myself when I'd stressed. I have to actively think about what I'm doing so that I don't sabotage myself. I try to have at least 3 ounces of protein first if I just have to indulge in carbs. That seems to take the edge off it. I can't do as much damage because there just isn't enough real estate and I am thinking about it. All these things help.
List your 3 best WOW moments?
My son's hugging me and getting their arms all the around me so that they could grasp their elbows with their opposite hands when they hugged me.
Seeing light between my legs. My pants don't wear out between the thighs anymore!
Being able to try on any gown I wanted and to have them fit!!! Sometimes they even had to clip them tighter in the back!
Do you like being in pictures?
While I don't think I would say that I was truly camera shy before, I am generally, reasonably comfortable now. I am still very self conscious about my turkeyneck, bat wings and spare tire though... In some ways maybe as much as I was before about my excess weight. I'm still working on this.
What can you do now that you couldn’t do before WLS?
Tie my shoes and breathe, sit in a booth and breathe, fit in an airplane seat with room to spare, shop in any store I want to, sit on my husband's lap without fear of cutting off his circulation, wear a single digit size, manage the summer heat, walk and walk and walk... Too many to list, but this is a good start.

Just in general, live my life effortlessly without worrying whether my weight is going to be a hindrance/issue, etc...
Hey Rhonda,
Thanks so much for your responses... I think that they sound right in line with my own for the most part. Like you, I think I get enough fluids, but I'm not sure that enough is 'just' water.
I forgot that the last movie that I saw was also 'The Blind Side'. Wasn't that a lovely movie? It makes you think about all of those kids that have just been 'written off.' My favorite SIL and her husband foster youngsters and last year adopted one of the sweethearts that captured their hearts.
Hope to see you in the new year,

What can you do now that you couldn’t do before WLS?
I have so much energy
Hi Cathy,
Thanks for participating...
Like you I LOVE Cheese... I try to take it easy so that I don't over do it, but I must admit that I do love it.
We must be kindred spirits of sorts because I also love walking the beach, reading, sudoku and the movies... All are lovely escapes... Throw in a good book and it sounds like a perfect vacation.
I also struggle with the exercise thing... I exercise more now than I ever did before, but I'm not good about consistent workouts and if I ever get to point where I make and carry out new year's resolutions, exercising just might be on the list.
I also attended my son's wedding last year and it was phenomenal to be able to wear a beautiful gown and to have people nearly drop their jaw when the saw me. We have wedding number 2 coming up this summer, so we'll see how that goes. I'm planning on dancing the night fantastic at this son's wedding too!

Do you have a BFF?
Yes, and Molly lives in south Georgia, my hometown. I have many others but Molly became family as well.
What is your favorite time of day?
Early mornings, sitting in my recliner with my coffee and laptop.
What is your favorite way to relax?
Either surfing on the web, talking to close friends on the phone, or reading a good book with my spoiled dog in my lap. What a life. LOL
How much H20 do you drink a day?
NOT enough!!! Shame in me.
What is your biggest struggle?
During my stall times I get frightened because I'd LOVE to reach my goal weight one day but it's a dream that I'm scared to death to find out that it'll just be a dream.
List your 3 best WOW moments?
Crossing my legs, wearing 7 size smaller clothes, not having to shop in the plus size dept. any longer.
Do you like being in pictures?
Now, I don't mind it so much.
What can you do now that you couldn't do before WLS?
Walk without pain and being out of breath and of course, further distances, stand up & sing in a 2 hour Christmas Cantata without my back & feet hurting, trim & polish my own toenails...LOL,
Loving my WLS!!!!!
I love nuts, but have had two really bad reactions to walnuts... so now I'm a bit leery of them... I can eat a few in a salad or something cooked, but when I dumped on them I was eating about a quarter cup serving and they sent me to the moon. I haven't ventured too far with any other types of nuts since then, so I don't know how they will effect me... I don't think my reaction is common. It seems that most folks are able to tolerate nuts without incident... Actually, I recall that I had been enjoying peanuts before the first incident with the walnuts and never had an issue. I may get brave and try pecans, almonds, peanuts, etc... again.
Remember that you are still pretty early in your journey and you are likely to get farther than you might think. If you ever read through my own profile, you'll see that I too had concerns that I wouldn't get to my goal... As you'll see I not only got there but surpassed it and then came back again. Hang in there... You'll do great!

It' funny, i don't easily let people get to know me... i'm always kind of guarded. But I'll be as open as i can with these threads in the spirit of getting to know each other.
What is your favorite WLS friendly snack?
Yogurt... i eat it alot. Mostly i eat Yoplait fat free flavors with my favorites being strawberry/Bannana or Pomagranite. I'm just beginning to eat the greek yogurts.... now that i know the vanilla pudding secret!
Last movie you saw in a movie theater?
2012 An action film based on the Mayan theory that the world will end in 2012. LOTS & LOTS of action with great graphics.
Do you have a BFF? Like Barb, i have a few... One lives in Ft. Myers Florida and we've been friends since I was 5 years old. Then i have my buddy Jeanette, she also lives in Florida, Ft. Lauderdale. We've been friends for about 45 years. I miss them both, like i miss a few other friends i made while i lived in S. Florida. Then of course my husband Stan. Even though i named him last, he's at the top of my BFF list. It's just that i've know him the shortest time of my BFF's. Only 35 years!!
What is your favorite time of day? Late at night... after the house is quiet and no one is stirring but me. Whatis your favorite way to relax? Reading, reading and more reading... with a little shopping thrown in!
How much H20 do you drink a day? Well... how do i answer that??? I drink alot in the course of a day.... 64-96 ounces usually. But i have to admit that VERY little is actuall is pure/unadulterated H2O! I usually d rink sweet sugar free/caffine free tea that i make myself. My theory is if Weigh****chers considers anything without caffine water, then so do I. That's my story and i'm sticking by it!!
What is your biggest struggle? Eating...Eating within WLS parameters. I have the benefit/downfall of being able to eat just about anything, sweets, pasta, bread...anything!!! It all goes down, it all stays down and i can actually eat larger quantities for an RNY'er.
List your 3 best WOW moments? 1. Fitting in the pedicure chair and being able to close the arm. 2. Being able to breathe without an inhaler. 3. SHOPPING!!! Anyplace at all... and the clothes actually fit!!! And I LOVE clothes. I spent the last 20 years in sweat pants and tee shirts. I'm making up for lost time!
Do you like being in pictures? No!!! Never have and doubt i ever will!!! Even after losing almost 200 lbs, i still look fat to me!
What can you do now that you couldn’t do before WLS? Walk!!! I couldn't walk from my front door to the mailbox. Now i can walk for miles!!! Also, see the WOW moments answer and think.... Shop, shop, shop
