My surgery- Proximal RNY to Distal RNY *XPost*

Hi everyone,
I'm getting nervous and anxious! My surgery is Fri, 11-20-09. I'll be going from a proximal RNY to a distal RNY. I had gastric bypass in 2003 and did really well and lost 140 lbs. I kept it off for about a year. I have now gained all the weight back that I lost due to poor eating habits and not following the rules. I feel like I now have a second chance. I'm scared of failure again. I've got all my vitamins ordered and have my liquids ready for after surgery.
I would like to lose 140 lbs. Is there anyone out there that has gotten a distal RNY because you gained all your weight back? If so, were you able to lose back down to where you were after your original bypass?
I've been reading posts for awhile now, and I've become familiar with some of the ones on this revision board who have had the distal bypass. I just don't know if there's anyone out there who has had a distal bypass and was able to lose over 100 lbs. If so, can you share your experience?
Thanks for reading!

Hi Cheryl,

I haven't had a revision but I did have a distal RNY because I had over 200 lbs to lose.  My starting weight was 463.  On my surgical day, I was 433.  As of today (19 months post op), I am 209.5.  Total weight loss is right at 254 lbs.  Distal RNY works and I am sure if you follow the rules, you will be able to lose the the weight again.  One word of caution, as you probably know, gas is a fairly bad side effect of RNY.  Be warned, distal RNY makes the gas problem a whole lot worse.  You learn to deal with it and figure ways to manage it in daily life, but it can be problematic and very bothersome for some people.  For me, it was a more than fair tradeoff to lose lose 254 lbs and suffer with some gas issues.  Good luck.

Hey Dalton,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I also put my post on the RNY forum, and a lot of DSers came over there and responded to my post. I am so confused and upset because now I am having doubts about the distal bypass. I'll be calling my doctor's office tomorrow morning about discussing the option of revising to a DS instead of the distal bypass. I'm upset because it's so close now to my surgery date, and I don't want to mess things up.
Thanks again.

Cheryl,

Talk to your doctor.  He can best advise you on how to proceed.  It will all work out just fine.  Regardless of which procedure you end up going with, you will no doubt be succesful.  I know someone who has had the DS and she has done phenomenal.  Truthfully, I am a little jealous of her.  She is able to eat a lot of things that are a bit more indulgent than than the typical RNY'er can and still lose weight.  The malabsorptive factor is a lot more intense so you tend to lose more and more rapidly.  The tradeoff is the extra vitamin deficiency that you have to compensate for by taking more supplements.  One thing  to mention, my friend had BCBS insurance and they consider the DS 'experimental' so its not covered.  She eventually won her appeal and they covered it after a year of dealing with the insurance game.  Good luck and trust that your doctor will provide you the best course of action for your own personal needs.

I just had the DS with Dr. Sudan on the 12th.  I'm sure he'd talk to you about the pros and cons of revising to both and that it wouldn't be a big deal to switch to the DS if that's what you want.  You may have to postpone your surgery a bit if it requires a different submittal to insurance, but if that's what it takes to get you the surgery you want, then it'll be worth it.  (I was to have an RNY in Jan 09 and had a DS last week, so I know about having to postpone.  The length of time for me was due to a change in employment and wanting to build up some paid time off before going out.)

Good luck in whatever you decided!

Thanks Tessy! I've decided on the distal. I'm leaving tonight to drive to Duke. My surgery is tomorrow morning at 10:45.
Thanks for the support. I'll let you know how it goes.
