Lapband vs. RNY
Check all of your options, RNY, Lapband, VSG and DS. Spend some time on each of the forums and read up on them. Only you can decide which surgery is going to be best for your lifestyle. No matter what surgery you choose, keeping the weight off forever is going to depend on you. You can gain weight back or not lose all of your weight with any surgery if you don't follow the rules.
Hi Shan,
I am going to get on my soap box here because I am speaking from my own experince and some people I know.
I have ***** footed with diets all my life.
Some I did great at and many I gained the weight back and more.
I choose RNY because I did not want to feel like a failure any more.
I have been given a tool and from day one I have learned to use it
.
I have been on the go most all day food was not on the list but as soon as I got home I had a small cup of chicken and corn chowder and a few bites of a chef salad with balsimic spray on it.
I am totally happy and content with what I ate.
During running around today I walked up 4 flights of steps and doing fine.
Before surgery I would have had to stop half way up to rest to make it to the top.
From what I have heard about the band is sometimes it will work and many times some people do not feel restriction and they go for fills all the time.
Some I have heard they had to have the band removed and ended up having RNY.
I had to make a choice I could live with and I am happy to say I am alive and doing well.

Shan,
There is not best surgery. Different surgeries have different strengths and weaknesses and it's best to work with your dr. to find the best choice for you. It looks as though you have already chosen the RNY. Studies for people 10 years out show about an average of 70 percent excess weight loss for RNY patients and 60 percent excess weight loss for lapband patients. Shan,
Whatever decision that you make, make sure that it is the best decision for you based on your lifestyle, goals etc. I had the Lap Band 12/2008 and so far have lost 70 lbs. So 70 lbs in 8 1/2 months isn't bad!!! I know the fills can be intimidating, but they are not painful at all; I've had two thus far and can say that I'm at my "sweet spot" perfect restriction.
I decided on the band b/c it was less invasive, removable if need be and adjustable, so if I wanted to have children, I could remove all of the saline out of the band, then refill it after birth, with no issues. With the Lap Band, you really have to work at correcting your eating habits, as it is a restrictive only procedure. My band has really helped me deal with my obession with food and taught me good techniques on how to eat in moderation and feel comfortable.
Whatever decision you make, it will be the right one, no matter the procedure, b/c you're taking the steps to become healthier.
Good Luck
