Hi everyone!! I usually just read posts for all of the good info on here but a strange thing happened that I didnt expect and I was wondering if it was normal.....well here goes, I had my RNY this past wednesday July 29th...Ive always read head hunger or the psychological part of not being able to eat was the worst part....that they operate on your stomach not your brain, but my brain seemed to completely change.... I have no desire to eat what so ever, no head hunger at all thank goodness. it was like I went in for an operation and came out completely losing an addiction...when I would wake in the morning I immediately thought of what can I eat...if I was bored, hum lets see what I can eat, now nothing!! I never think of food at all....I know its only been a few days since surgery and I hope this feeling lasts, and I know I cant eat anything now, but dont care to if I could. I'm not even eating my sugar free jello, just sip sip sipping...smelling food doesnt bother me, my litle girl has sat right in front of me with a doughnut today and I could smell it, but nothing...really weird. And this is from someone who would eat if I was hungry or not. Is this normal?? Will this blessing last?? Has anyone else had this wonderful problem?? I would even dream about food before, but so far the only dream I had was the day after my RNY I dreamed I accidently ate a french fry and only chewed it 2 times before swallowing and I remembered I had the surgery and freaked out then I woke up lol...I just wondered if anyone else experienced completely losing the food addiction after surgery, or am I just odd and extremely lucky...

When an RNY is performed there is an interruption of the hormone known as grehlin. This hormone is what makes us 'feel' hungry. Many people don't have a return of that feeling of hunger for anywhere from 3 to 9 months, but for most the since of hunger does return. Head hunger is another thing all-together and when it raises it's head varies from person to person. That said, it's really a desire for something vs a biological 'hunger' for it. We will have to learn to differentiate and learn to act appropriately, but it will take some time. Enjoy the lack of hunger while it lasts.

I was like that for about 2 weeks.  Then it slowly comes back once you can eat more things.  I have to say I can avoid things that I would have never had the power to do before... mainly out of fear of dumping.

Sorry to say that it wont last :-) Surgery in no way possible can cure head hunger... I was/am an emotional eater... I had to work on that issue... while surgery definately helped I still had to work on the behavior pattern. I did a liquid diet pre-op and that really got me where I didnt want/desire foods... from the body being 'flushed' out... liquids post-op were such a pain I couldnt even imagine eating foods.. as time passed and I could eat more and more choices opened up things change. As for the physcial hunger it may or may not come back and it can do so at any time. At about 1 or 2 years out (I forget so long ago!!) I started to get hungry if I didnt eat enough or I waited to long to eat. I experience hunger now but its nothing compared to before and its phsyical hunger... I still deal with (and always will) emotional hunger but I know how to recognize and deal with it now :-)

Yeah thats what I figured that once I started eating and HAD to eat then it wouldnt be as easy...which is a bummer. But maybe feeling like this now, will help me in the future with using discipline and willpower. I think I'll do well, I seem to have a fear of messing things up, I plan on going strictly by the rules. Thanks for the replies you all are awesome!
