I Did Not Know I Had a Drama Queen In Me

Been lurking for week and half, drama queen in full effect, and been unable to share.   Kept up with your posts but my mind set just could not, ok would not let me share but I still got encouragement from where you are in your journey, so thank you for the daily dose!   I am going to lie right now and say I’ll make this short.   I was progressing nicely into week4 for couch to 8k. Ran last Sat, no problem. Sunday was a rest day. Monday I was a little stiff and my knee was aching a lot. I ignored it and ran. My knee ‘talked’ to me all day.   Tuesday ran again and my knee ‘yelled’ at me during the run and the rest of the day. I popped some Tylenol and told it to ‘suck it up’.   Wednesday I popped some Tylenol before I ran but barely into the run, my knee said ‘You suck it up and get off this treadmill’. Knee won, major pain, called the doctor for an appointment.  I do not go to the doctor for any thing. I have a high tolerance for pain so understand this was PAIN!   Quick summary to fast forward to today… In too much pain to think of anything else Refused to stay off knee…still taking stairs, walking, doing everything except running In so much pain, if you had seen me you would have said ‘she is mighty confident’ or ‘she walking like a pimp’ – had a little boop going on to hide the pain I have been MAD, MAD, MAD…I will just stand on treadmill and fuss at knee everyday Dr says it BURSITIS (and a possible hair line fracture but unable to tell because my bursa is too swollen) (quick side track) My 41st birthday is coming, just found 1st gray hair couple weeks ago, and now I am diagnosed with something my Grandma had! I am so thankful for every day I have that I view my age as a gift not, something to run from, but I do not need these reminders of me getting old)… Dr prescribes physical therapy for a few weeks (I am so thrilled – NOT)   Reflections from this past week: What I am going through is minor compared to the troubles of others but it is my journey and it is big to me. It took me (4) years to find an exercise I LOVE and after all these years of toting around that weight, my knee says GOTCHA! My glass is really overflowing as this could be worse in so many ways Listening to your body and actually doing what you know is best for your body is 2 different things. I heard my knee loud and clear 3 days after I continued to jog in pain Had this pain occurred when I first started running, I would have surely given up and not tried jogging. Although I hate that it has happened now, it is better that it did because I so want to recover and run again. Athletes get injured all the time and have to recover from the sport they love for months and years. I may not be an athlete (far from it and I certainly do not have the fancy healthcare they have or the money they have for trainers and what not) but I can recover just as they do.   Ok, it will be a while before I can run again. I have not fully accepted it in my mind. Knee feels good today and my first thought was, let’s run!   My hubby has tried to be such a support! He has been suggesting other exercise routines and things for me to do. I HATE THEM ALL! I WANT TO RUN! Sorry, I yell about if every few minutes. I have tried my walking tapes, my exercise bike, and my exercise ball over the past couple of days and I am not motivated to do any of them again.   I have bought an elliptical to at least give me the impression I am running and to keep me moving. I also bought a new journal since the one I had was setup to get me through couch to 8K. I am a week behind in my goals and have not turned to eating to soothe my moods. Yelling at my knee has been working fine.   So I am keeping a stiff upper lip. The hardest part is in my head. I could care less about the pain (says the women who could be running on a fracture). The hardest part is mental. I so WANT TO RUN and I cannot and IT IS MESSING WITH MY HEAD!   I’ve been reading running magazines lately. Hubby and I went to the bookstore Sat. I looked for a running magazine then I said, why you gonna look, you can’t run, find another magazine to take your mind off it. The very next magazine I laid my eyes on was ARTHRITIS TODAY. My eyes welled up and I ran to my hubby laughing (too emotional).   I’m done. Thanks for listening.

(((((HUGS)))))

Mine knee started bothering me during the couch to 5K program and I've backed off of it for a little longer. I hope you didn't fill out the subscription form for the Arthritis Today. You gotta admit that it was funny. As hard as it sounds - stay off the knee if that is what the doc tells you. You'll be running before you know it.

Thanks for the much needed hugs!

If I had this pain when I started couch 25K, I would have stopped running and never tried again.

I laughed and cried so hard about the magazine! My hubby was laughing too. Thought they would put us out the store!

I am behaving. I walked last night for an hour on the treadmill. Hubby came to check on me,. He said he thought he heard the treadmill speed up so he was coming to catch me running.

He was glad to see me behaving and walking. The thought did cross my mind!

Thanks for the encouragement. I am being good!

I wondered where you have been.
I totally understand  why you ignored your knee I tend to become so focased on what I have to do to help myself I will keep on going no matter what.
I do know the elliptical is easy on the knees but it will really burn the calories too.
I keep seeing the new treadmill/elliptical machine on TV and told Lee I want that but OMG I relized I could not run like I can on my treadmill.
In fact as I am going farther and faster I have noticed my treadmill is smelling like something is burning LOL I figured it out I think I was trying to work it too hard at a lower speed so I increased it and it did ok yesterday.
Do you have any free weights?
Maybe focas on lifting for a little while as your knee heals.

I have been hiding and yelling at my knee! Totally missing ya'll!

You said it 'no matter what'! I have been seeing your posts on your progress. Keep up the great work!

I do have some free weights. My hubby suggested I use them too. Maybe...just maybe...

Hey Valerie,

Ben and I have been missing you, We're going to Duke's support group tonight... I am so sorry to hear that your knee is messing with your exercise routine. I hope you do listen to it and allow it to heal so that you can engage it again soon.

Warmly,

Enjoy support group!
