Lori,

This may not be what you want to hear but you have to have a referral from your primary care provider in order for the insurance to pay.

I went to Hickory and surgery at Frye.  There is bariatric surgeons in Charlotte but you have to have a primary care physician make the referral.

Is your BMI over 40 or atleast 35 and 2 co morbidities.??

I would call your health insurance and find out what Weight loss surgeons they accept. They can also tell you whether they will cover the surgery. Calling the insurance needs to be the first step and the requirements they have. Not all medcost insurance covers the surgery

I have Medcost and I did not have to have a referral to a surgeon.  The way that mine worked was that I contacted the insurance company and they determined if I was eligible, then the referred my information to a Bariatric Nurse Coordinator that contacted me.  She had several questions to determine eligibility and once I was eligible she told me all the requirements that I would have to complete. Once I did that I told them which hospital I wanted to good to.

I had to complete a 6 months supervised PCP visits, meet with a nutritionalist, and have a behavorial health assessment.

At about 4 months in my PCP visits the BNS told me that I could schedule an appt. with the surgeon for a consult.  The surgeon had a few requirements that he wanted done, before surgery could me scheduled.

I am now waiting to hear from insurance as to whether I am approved or not.  That was submitted to them this week.

I hope this helps you, but the first step is to contact you insurance.

Lori,

Not sure what your looking for, I did not need my PCP to refer me although she did.  Carolina Medical Center Mercy has weight loss seminars on the First and Third Tuesdays each month
http://www.carolinasweightmanagement.org/default/schedule-se minar/page,2  They really send information to your PCP to get information from your records.  Of course I really would recommend Dr Kuwada he is a great surgeon.

I wish you the best on your journey
Sandy

I don't know anything about medcost, but if your PCP isn't working with you to achieve your goals them maybe you should find another PCP.  You need a doctor that will listen to you..

Just my opinion....

Lori,

Whatever you do make sure you explore the WLS option of the Duodenal Switch.  The OH forum can be found under "Forums" , then "Surgical Forums", then "Duodenal Switch."  At your BMI you would be well served by the DS surgery.

I live near Asheville and I went to Atlanta to Dr. Dennis Smith at Advanced Obesity Surgery.  While your PCP may not help you, he/she needs to be supportive.  If he isn't, find one who will be.
