Insurance Problem - Thoughts?

My employer has separate medical and mental health insurance providers. I found out today that my mental health insurance provider wont pay for the psych testing required by my medical insurance provider before I can get my surgery scheduled.

Out of pocket, these tests cost $450 I dont have, and this is the last clearance I need before I can schedule.

Has anyone run into this? Any suggestions?

Hi Molly,

I haven't run into this before, but I have a couple of suggestions. First, see about cross-posting this to the main forum, insurance forum, RNY and any other surgery forums you might think of... You might also consider cross-posting it to the mental health forum. The reason I suggest cross posting it, is that this is not state specific and as you cast a wider net, you are likely to find someone who has experience with this issue.

I have Aetna medical insurance but the mental health is Cigna, I had such a hard time finding a provider for my psych avail that I did pay for it out of pocket it was just easier for me. Mine was 325 and it was a persons name provided by my Surgeon. I am sure if I would have keep calling I would have found someone that would have been oked by my insurance company it was just so much of a pain it was not worth the bother for me.

I had to pay for my mental health eval up front and the insurance company would cover once I was approved for the surgery.
However $450 seems like a lot?? I definately paid less than $200... if not around $100 for the 1 visit I had with the psych... it was about an hour long.

First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5
Total lost - 153 Since surgery - 117!
Goal weight - 155 (mine) 180 (surgeons)
Current weight - 135 (2020 I lost 10lbs due to dedicating myself to working out more and being in better shape)

1/14/2025 still maintaining 135 :-)
