Had my appt. with Dr. V in Charlotte.

He was nice enough, very informative.   He first talked with me about why I wanted the surgery and then we went over my health issues.  He asked which surgery I was leaning toward and I told him the DS, he asked me why the DS, and when I gave him my reasons, he said that they were very good ones, I had done my home work.  He then told me that I was considered a "light weight" in his book for the DS, but if I was adamant about it, we would most certainly further discuss it.   And then..he asked What insurance do you have again?  BCBSNC, I say, and he then says, "Oh, I'm sorry, but the DS is out altogether for you.  They require you to  have a BMI of 50 before they will cover it."  So, I'm bummed a little.     

So, now I have to choose between the RNY and banding.  I'm not going to lie the first surgery that I had heard of and researched was the RNY, but then I found the DS.  He said he could see me losing 90lbs with the RNY and I didn't think to ask is that with the RNY alone or exercising also?  With the band he said about 65lbs.  I weigh 271, I need every bit off that I can get off.     I have a choice to make, that's for sure.

But, just thought I would update.

I sure do hope you will check with some of the insurance experts on the DS forum before you forgo the DS and get another surgery.

They can help you get the DS and they have helped many many people before you.

I had first thought I would get the RNY because it was the only surgery I knew of besides the band but when I read the literature (the scientific studies) I realized the DS has MUCH better long term outcomes and I am too old to do this twice!

So head over to the DS forum and ask for help with your insurance!!!!
