on vacation

I'm really having a fun and relaxing time on vacation visiting my sister up here in Minneapolis, but the food we've been eating has not been the best for me.  Luckily I have not had any problems (yet) but I'm eating stuff that I would not normally choose, esp. when we go out for dinner or we're at a dinner party, or whatever.  A couple of times I could tell my tummy was saying, "What the HELL what THAT you just put in me?!?"  I'd reply, "Uh, I didn't know what it was when I ordered it off the menu from the Polish place, or Thai place, or Greek place, or whatever."  I still haven't been nauseous and haven't thrown up though.  I think my tummy will be glad when we head back home.  I am getting a very good, protein packed b'fast every day though.  And I bought several good choices to keep on hand for snacking:  nuts, sf jello, sf popsicles, yogurt, and cheese.  It's going out to dinner at these exotic restaurants that's putting a kink in my plan.

Hi Meredith,

I've been in CA since mid June and have been out and about more than usual too. I don't know if you know where you'll be headed when going out for dinner, but if you do, you might call ahead and let them know that you'll be visiting their restaurant and ask for high protien, low fat/carb suggestions... Otherwise, I'd ask the wait person for high protien low fat/carb suggestions. Most restaurants have those available, but you might need help steering towards them. I don't normally discuss why, I'm asking for these suggestions. Most people just assume I'm watching my weight. It doesn't even occur to them that I've had WLS.

It sounds like you are doing a great job of arming yourself for success with your protien-packed breakfasts and lite snacks. I'll bet that you are doing better than you are giving yourself credit for and soon you'll be able to 'control' your environment a little bit more when you get home.

Wishing you all the best as you enjoy the rest of your trip.

Hi Meredith,
Before I go out to eat especially if I know the name of where I am going I look up the menu online.
By doing this is can give me a good idea of what they offer.
So many times I will just get an apitizer(sp) and hardly ever a full meal most places are accomadating if you just order an apitizer(sp) and I will say I would like them to serve me when everyone else gets their main meal.

Hi Meredith!  Vacations can be tricky, but I swear, that everytime I come home from a trip when I've been eating "different" foods, the scale drops!  Go figure, I think the body gets shook up and lets go of a pound or two.  I'm curious to see if this works for you, too.  Let us know, and have a safe trip home!

I am very curious too!  I can't wait to get on my scale when I get home to see what the result will be.  I am trying so hard to be good, but the choices I'm faced with every day aren't always ideal.  Tonight was a perfect example.  We went to an Italian place on the way home from the mall.  Nearly everything had pasta with it.  I finally selected a beef entree - beef medalions wrapped around Italian seasoned ground beef in a tomato sauce with onions and fresh herbs over a bed of pasta - and asked the pasta be changed to the whole wheat kind.  I ate maybe 4 pieces of that whole wheat penne pasta with my beef dish, of which I ate less than half.  When I sat down I was so hungry I ate a tiny piece of Italian bread with butter before dinner came.  I was hungry because the Cajun spiced chicken tenders (appetizer) I had at lunch in the mall were so spicey hot I couldn't eat but a few of them.  My sister finished them.  Then we all went to Coldstone Creamery!  I watched them eat ice cream and had none.
