Problems with raw veggies/fruit?

Hi all, this question is for post-ops...

I've been eating more raw veggies and fruit lately since there are so many of my favorites in season now.  The problem is that I've been experiencing more abdominal pain and cramping afterwards.  I'm just wondering if any of you post-ops, especially those > 1 year out, have had similar problems....

Thanks for any feedback you wish to share.

Hey gal!
So good to hear from you!  I have been thinking about you a lot lately and wondering how Ronnie is doing.  Also been wondering about you as well... it's been a while.

Re: the fresh fruit... after low-carbing it for over a year, I am finally treating myself to lots of fresh fruit.  The only thing I have seen is that I am gaining weight lately.  I do tolerate all fruits and veggies well.  Hell, I tolerate EVERYTHING well.  I think that's part of the problem.  I think I am doomed to living la vida LOCArb forever if I want to keep the weight off!

Hi yourself! It's good to hear from you.  I was thinking about you the other day when we were at the lake...

I'm doing really good; still maintaining but at abou 4 pounds above my Lowest weight.  I think this is where I'm meant to be.  I would still love to get to 135 but that may only come after PS if I decide to go that path.  i'm also eating way too many carbs and when i cut back, I'll drop a couple of pounds.

Ronnie is doing well.  He had a defibrillator put in on May 28th and is doing well after that.  He has another surgery for another parastomal hernia in Aug.  Hopefully that will fix him for a LONG time!

I hope that I don't have to give up the fresh veggies and fruit because they are so good to me and for me!

Take care and come by the lake and see me....  Alice

Hey Alice....

I have been eating a lot more raw veggies too in my salads, squash, cucumbers, radishes, peppers, etc...  I have not had pain and cramping but definitely a lot more gas and as the raw veggies are surely upping my fiber intake.

I can hear my tummy processing them so I know my body is working a lot harder to digest them.

If I am gonna eat   like a fat girl, then I gotta workout   like a skinny girl!

Hi Alice,
I dearly love melons especially honeydew but...
I focas on filling up with protien first.
AS you know I work in a grocery store and get first dibs on produce but  I try to fill my pouch with protein  first and always.
The guy in produce gave me some bing cherries I love them with a passion but no protein. in them.So I still have a half a pound of cherries in the fridge over two weeks old I guess they will be thrown out soon.
I love the fruits and veggies of summer but have found I am not buying as much in years past.

Like many of us, i too am using the fresh fruits and veges available... i didn't eat anything but protein last year at this time, so i'm making up for lost time this year!!!

I actually also went back on the nexium shortly after starting the fruits and veges... Hmmm.... never put the 2 together until now but the extra sugars from the fruits and veges and the extra ruffage is probably causing my need to go back on the Nexium....

Saying all that... since i've restarted the Nexium, i'm having no problem and make the most of the summer bounty... and i LOVE it!!!

I tolerate most fruits and vegs. I am careful with fruits because of sugar. Broccolie  gets stuck a lot  so I stay away from it.
Your wls date was smilar to mine so I was wondering...
How much do you eat now...volume wise. Sometimes I am afraid I eat to much.  I need to measure again to be sure. I think 1/2 to 3/4 cup .

Hey Myrtis,

I don't measure anymore either, but I use small plates and bowls to keep my portions the right size.  I'd guess I'm sticking to about a cup of food at any meal. My main problem now is sweets... I tolerate most with no problem and am afraid I'm getting addicted to carbs again.  I almost wish I DID dump so I'd stay away from them.

I'm happy at the size I'm at but still would love to lose another 5-10 pounds.  If I'm ever going to do that, I need to quit the carbs again.  I bought the 5 day Pouch Test book, but have'nt tried it yet.

I have been staying at 168. I am happy here but would love to make it to my goal do 150. My dr. and dh think I am at goal. I eat some things I should not ..like a chicken tender and 2 or  3 potatoe wedges. I am still afraid of sugar. I keep it in the single digits. I do dump on sugar. I do not drink any form of soda.  Do you eat rice or pasta. I am afraid of that also... so I eat only a spoonfull. I also do not eat much breAd.  It seems to lay heavy in my pouch. I am so curious about others that had their surgery the same time I did. I fear I am doing wrong.  I do not eat a lot of raw vegs.  They sometimes lay wrong in my pouch. Most of the vegs that I eat are cooked.  I did not mean to make such a long post but wooops here it is.

What is wrong with a chicken tender and 2-3 potatoe wedges?  The one thing that I do not do is drink sodas.  I have taken a sip of my DH's coke and it feels like a volcano erupting in my pouch so I know that is one thing that I won't go back to.

I do eat a little pasta and rice but not much.  I try to eat the meat/protein first.  Rice seems to sit well but sometimes pasta leaves my system feeling gassy.  The raw vegies do the same thing, it's like I can feel them working their way through the small intestine and I get pains that will ease up and then it moves along and hurts again.  It even happens after a very small salad so that is why I think it has something to do with the vegies being raw.

I don't eat much bread but I have found something that I really like.  They are Sandwich thins by Arnolds.  They are round and thin and sliced so I usually only eat one half at a time.  On rare occasions, I made a sandwich with the whole thing, but can rarely eat the whole thing.  I end up eating the meat/cheese and tossing the rest.  I found these at Sams and I think some of the groc stores carry them too.  They are multigrain and have a decent amount of protein.

When I first started this "journey", my desire was to lose most of the excess weight and be able to eat like a NORMAL person; i.e. be able to eat anything I wanted, in the right portions.  I think I've accomplished that and I'm really happy with my results.  I do need to exercise more than I do, especially cardio, but I'm improving on that too, slowly.

Since we had our surgeries about the same time, have you thought about plastic surgery at all?  I am thinking about getting an appointment for a consult just to see what could be done and how much it would cost.

Nice talking with ya!  Alice
