bread at restaurants

I've been eating in restaurants a bit more lately, with company visiting and going on vaction (still having my "scale withdrawal").  I have noted that most bring hot, fresh bread or rolls and butter to the table before the meal.  **sigh**  I NEVER partake, but I wish they wouldn't do that.  It smells so good and looks so good.  Our world is flooded with carbs, isn't it?  When I walk down isles at grocery stores I see carbs everywhere I look.  It's no wonder Americans are so overweight!!!  I really don't feel deprived and I don't ever use the "D" word (DIET), since I look at this as a lifestyle change and NOT a diet, but looking at that bread at every meal makes wanna pout a bit.  I could probably have some and not blow it too badly, but I'm only about 6 months out and I'm supposed to stay away from stuff like that.  At this point I'm trying to limit my carbs to a bite of fruit, veg, or an occasional low fat cracker with cheese or peanut butter.  Those hot rolls are haunting me though!!!

Meredith,
I do so know what you mean. I am preop but times when I have been on low carb diets I have had to ask others at the table to move the bread AWAY from me. Get it as far away as possible!
I have always been a bread and butter person. When I was in first grade, for a dime we could either buy ice cream or hot rolls with real butter with our lunch at school. I went for the rolls and butter every time!
Of course now I eat the rolls and the ice cream which is what helped me get to need WLS!
Keep up the good work with following your post op eating instructions and keep enjoying your vacation, without bread. Jackie

Hi Meredith,

I know what you mean and I LOVE breads. I think the thing that has really worked for me is to know that I don't have to leave it out, but it has to come in it's own time... When I was where you are in my journey, I rarely ever got there and I doubt you will either. My rules where that I had to consume 2 to 4 ounces of lean protein, followed by some complex carbs... that will probably fill you. Buy if you are able to consume that and have room for a couple of bites of simple carbs, you may want to enjoy them. For me, knowing that nothing is out of bounds, but just needs to be consumed after I have taken care of 'business' really helps me. Last night, I had a lovely salad with grilled chicken and when I was done, I had a 'small' piece of bread and even had a tiny bit of butter. I enjoyed it and it doesn't undo me. If I had started with the bread and butter, I'd have had more than I should have, I'm sure and wouldn't have had room for the stuff that actually fuels my body.... that said, good bread fuels my heart and soul and those need to be fed too... just in moderation.

Hugs,

Barbara

I LOVE hot rolls at resturants.  Think Logan's Roadhouse, if you've ever been to one of those!  OMG!  I, as of the past couple of months, will cut one in half and the wife and I will share it.  Slipping?  Maybe a litte, but it's better than the half dozen I'd put away before...washed down with a pitcher of beer (whew!  all that yeast!  It's a miracle I didn't get an infection!!  ROTFLOL) and followed up with a 16oz Steak, baked potato, and dessert!  LOL

My husband's favorite place to eat has always been Golden Corral and it was my favorite too simply because of the rolls.  Olive Garden just doesn't seem right without a breadstick or 5.  I have been to each of those places and can say that I successfully avoided both bread baskets.  Now, Mazatlan on the other hand is a different story.  At least I order the cheese dip to go with the chips.  Does that count???  hehe

Mexican restaurant (of course).  One in Williamston and one in Washington.  I could eat the cheese dip with a spoon but it's much better on the chips.
