Help Jacksonville, Wilmington, New Bern, Ect...
Hello everyone! I'm from the Jacksonville area... I got a referral to begin my way to a new me! When I got approved for my referral I called to make the apt, and it was with a DR. that doesn't do bariatric surgeries. I called Tricare, and they told me to find one on their website, and call back so I could have it switched. I have looked, but I have to call each place because the website don't specify if they do the surgeries or not, and now they are all closed haha.
I need a GASTROENTEROLOGIST who takes Tricare.
Help?

Ha Ha...that's funny. I am Jacksonville too. They did the same to me when my PCM specifically requested a doc in Greenville. I called this doctor in Jville to see if they did bariatric surgery and of course they didn't. I called tricare and asked to switch my referal to Dr Christopher Mann at southern surgical associates in Greenville. Dr Wade Naziri and Dr Kenneth MacDonald are on the tricare list too and in the same practice as Dr Mann. I know Greenville is a bit of a drive but these doctors are well known in the area for their practice.
The problem with doing the search online with tricare you have to do a search for general surgery. There is no way to tell if the doctors do bariatric surgery. You can find the physicians I listed above by doing a search on tricare in the general surgery category in zip code 27834 and call tricare back with the info they need.
You can also do a search on obesityhelp.com for other tricare posts in Jacksonville and see what docs they used on their profile. That's how I found my physician.
Good Luck!

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both, And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could, To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there, Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay, In leaves no step had trodden black, Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh, Somewhere ages and ages hence: two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.---Robert Frost
Dr MacDonald at Southern Surgical (in Greenville) is awesome!!! He also trains other doctors on Weight Loss Surgeries. He did my Gastric Bypass 7 years ago and my Gall Bladder surgery 2 years ago. I would crawl back to him if I needed any other surgeries!!! I love love love that doctor!
Best of luck!

Sheryl,
If you have the referral already you shouldn't need to contact your primary care physician (unless tricare tells you too). Call tricare and they should change the referral to the doctor you have chosen (thats what I did).
Then call the bariatric surgeon and ask about getting into their bariatric surgery class (most will have this so you walk away with knowledge of the surgery, office procedures, and insurance information).
If you have not done so yet get a username with mytricare.com. It's a good way to keep track of referrals and know when they go through.

My husband and I are both with Dr. Chapman at the Brody School of Medicine in Greenville. He has Tricare and I use his Tricare as my secondary insurance. We've had no problems using Tricare with Dr. Chapman. He is awesome! He is not only the chief bariatric surgeon, he's also the head of laprospopic surgery. His phone number at his office is:

I'm tired so I'm not sure if I'm spelling everything right. My eyes are half shut. I need to go to bed!
