Drinks pre op?
I have been reading several post, and noticed that the one thing that keeps showing up is the soda/caffeine/coffee topic.
right now, I am a coffee in the morning,(1 or 2 large cups) then soda at lunch and for afternoon break and sweet tea for supper.
Should I start cutting down or at least changing to non caffeine? The only thing I think will be hard is the coffee in the morning. I can do without the soda's and tea. I exchange it for water and I always have the flavored add in's for that. (Lemonade or fruit flavor's)
I've never been a milk drinker, but I do love a vanilla shake once in a while. Especially after supper time.
Any suggestion on how I should begin this?
Good luck to you!
Jason
Hi Hope,
I have to tell you that I was absolutely addicted to CocaCola before my surgery. I cut back a great deal, but didn't completely cut them out pre-op. Now that I'm post op, I rarely even have a sip of Coke. It's not that I can't tolerate it, but the carbonation that I used to covet, actually is the biggest reason I don't drink it anymore. I can only drink a little bit before I begin to feel bloated and a little 'uncomfortable.' I regularly drink decaf coffee and tea and have done so since fairly early in my journey. I will have a caffinated coffee or tea occasionally if decaf is unavailable, but that's rare. If you can 'wean' yourself off of the caffiene now, that would probably make things easier for you.
Wishing you all the best,

Weaning yourself now may help so give it a try.
My tastes totally changed right after surgery and it was about a year before they started changing back to where they used to be.
I am 3 years out and now:
chocolate does not taste as good as it used to so I can take it or leave it (I mostly leave it)
I hate the smell and taste of milk (before surgery used to drink a gallon within days )
cannot tolerate the sugar in milk or ice cream (NUT says I absorb the sugars too fast)
did not drink coffee regularly before surgery - absolutely love it now; have 2-3 cups a day (with splenda)
was never a big soda drinker before surgery - may have a sip once in a while now - carbonated drinks fill my pouch very quickly
Make healthy change snow but you will have to 'play' with it after surgery to see what works for you. What works for someone else may not work for you. You will learn to listen to your pouch and do what makes you feel comfortable.
All the best to you!

I have to say having the surgery is the best decision I have ever made. It helped with things I never dreamed of .

OH and all you lovely folks are a God Send. I am just in the valley of my journey. NOT even close to the bottom of the hill, so all of these post are very much needed.
Thank you all and keep in touch.
God Bless.
Hope.

I have switched to all diet soda's, and I only drank one cup of coffee today, and drank only one soda at lunch. I had a dr's appointment, so I didn't spend the afternoon at my desk.
Tomorrow will be the test. I'm going for one coffee, (I'm going to try only 1 teaspoon sugar, instead of 3) and water at lunch.
Wish me luck
