My Ring Story

Back in September of 2005, we went on a family cruise to the Bahamas.  I was so afraid that I would lose my wedding rings that I left them behind and went ringless.  My husband commented that I needed an inexpensive "vacation ring" that I could wear in their place, so that Christmas he surprised me with one.  It was so beautiful, but too small.  At the time, I was losing weight and had gone from 332 to 259.  Feeling really confident that I was finally going to be successful at getting the weight off, I put the ring in my jewelry box to wait for it to fit instead of getting it resized larger.  January came and the weight started steadily increasing again.  {sigh}

Fast-forward to post-RNY, when I began trying that "vacation ring" on every few weeks.  I was super excited that my weight loss this time would allow it to fit eventually!  :)

A couple of weeks ago, we were at a ballgame over an hour away from home.  After we got home, panic set in.  My wedding rings were not on my hand!!!  Here I had been so worried lately about them falling off because they'd gotten really loose.  Had it finally happened?  I knew I would probably never find them or get them back if they had!

Then it hit me...  I'd taken my rings off to apply sunscreen and had put them in my cupholder that's built-into my chair.  Someone had started talking to me about the scent of my organic herbal sunscreen and the distraction had made me forget all about having taken off my rings.  Thank goodness they were still in the cupholder in the trunk of our car...I'd have never forgiven myself!

With all that heart-failing fiasco, I realized that my wedding rings had gotten loose enough to make me afraid that they would fall off and be gone.  I decided to try the "vacation ring" on again, even though it had been just recently that it wouldn't even slide past my knuckle.  Low and behold!!!  It slid right on!!!

Now my wedding rings are safely put away and the "vacation ring" is worn lovingly in their place.  :)  This is the same wedding ring that the jeweler could not believe my husband needed to be made from a size 4 to a size 8...for the SAME WOMAN!  lol  I plan on having it resized again after I reach and maintain goal for awhile.

I love the idea of a 'vacation ring'. Maybe I should have one made for me. My regular wedding ring was made by my husband and I truly love it and don't want to lose it. I have been wearing it on a chain but I am afraid the chain will break. (It has once already). The ring is way to big and I don't want to have it resized because it is too special. I am hoping to get a charm bracelet to wear it on some time soon. Congrats for being able to wear the smaller ring now!

What a great story!

I have the opposite. My husband lost 50lbs during my honeymoon period. His ring got too big and sure enough, he lost! He lost it at church. Was on in the morning, gone int he afternoon. We searched desperately that day and we never found it. He was so upset with himself.

My rings have always been too tight. Could never get them off. They fit just fine now. My hubby has since started buying me rings again after I expressed an interest in jewelery after wls. I had only wore my engagement ring and wedding ring previously.

Now I have (2) more beautiful ones that I just love!

If I am gonna eat   like a fat girl, then I gotta workout   like a skinny girl!

Fionna,  How fun that you are able to enjoy rings now!  I used to love, love, love them, until my fingers got so chubby.  That's one of the things hubby commented on when I had my WLS.  One day he was rubbing my hands.  Looking at my fingers, he said, "I'll be glad when your fingers are long and slender again so you can wear rings."  It's amazing how many things changed about me the heavier I got and how many things I will reclaim once the weight comes off...ring-wearing being one of them!

I hate to hear that your hubby lost his ring.  My hubby's has been in my jewelry box since early on because of his job and the condition of his hands.  I've warned him that one of these days, probably post-retirement, he's wearing a wedding band!  lol

I lost a ring that was given to me.  It was my Grandmothers.  As I was reading your story, I felt the panic like it was my own.  How relieved you must have been to find them.  I wish I had.  My rings are too big too.  They are safely put away in my jewelry box.  The idea of a vacation ring is really good.  Congrats on your weight loss.  You are lovely.  BTW, how did your hair cut come out?  Did you decide to keep it natural?  It got me to thinking.  Instead of dying my hair to color the gray at my temples, I just had high lights put in.  My hair is a strawberry blond anyway so the gray is not as noticable.  but with the highlights, I can hardly see it myself.  Thanks for bringing up the subject and getting me thinking.  This is so much easier.

I am so sorry about your Grandmother's ring.  The thought of my wedding rings being gone was such a terrible feeling.  The memory of when/where/how we picked them out and the fact that they are just so very small and simple, like the way we started out, means so much to me.  I'd imagine they will be in the jewelry box now for quite some time but at least they are there.

My hair is still au naturale, just a little shorter.    I keep getting so many compliments about the color and I even had a friend come up to me last night that I hadn't seen in awhile.  She said that it was me that inspired her to go natural too and her hair looked so good!  So I've decided I am tres chic as is.

I bet I would LOVE your hair as you are doing it now.  My friend is strawberry blonde also and I'm telling you...her hair did look sooo good.  And yes, it is tons and tons easier to just have the cut to worry about!

Tell your hot young man-slave that I said to go buy you a vacation ring, or else!    hehehe

I think when I posted this thread, I was killing time before leaving for the ball game.    The girls won...then won again...now to just win this Friday's game and they are on to State in Raleigh!!!
