peanut butter

I have a question about peanut butter.  I'm a RNY newbie...not even two weeks.  I've looked through all the info. from my dietician and can't find anything about peanut butter.  Are we allowed to have it?  If so when?  I know it;s full of protein, but sugar as well.  I've been eating the Smart Balance brand before surgery (lots of good fats in it).

Thanks!

Michelle

Hi Michelle,

Please hold off and give your Nut. a call before delving into PB. Probably the biggest variable from one program to another is the dietary portion. What one program allows, another prohibits. My program at Duke is very concervative and had us on clear liquids and protien shakes for the first 3.5 weeks. The didn't allow PB until I was 3 months out. Re: sugar... RNY patients tend to be most susseptible to sugars and fats during the first few weeks and months. Your body may develop a 'tolerance' to them, but it usually takes some time.

Peanut butter was one of the first things I was allowed to eat after my 2 week post-op liquid diet.  I bought the Simply Jif.  I only ate 1 tablespoon at a time.  I never had any trouble with it.  I ate so much of it the first two weeks, I've not touched it since.  Good luck!

Hey Michele,

I agree with Barb. Programs vary as to when they suggest you introduce items to your diet so we recommend following your specific program. I had surgery at Duke so I did not try peanut butter until I was 3 months out.

Funny thing though, I loved peanut butter very much prior to surgery. When I finally tried it after surgery, I could not stand it!   Tasted terrible! My taste buds went crazy with foods I used to love.

I tried it again at 6 and 9 months and progressively I started to like it again. It was probably about a year later before I truly liked it enough to put it back in my eating plan.

Take your time and you be enjoying it soon!

Every doc and nutritionist will tell you different things.  My doc leans toward the cautious side and I was still on liquids 2 weeks after my surgery.  I would ask as well.  :)  Better to be safe than sorry!  However, I have always tolerated peanut butter well.
