Just wondering if any of you guys have experienced sciatica issues post op? I used to have some sciatic pain flare up in my left leg pre-op (sometimes it would get so bad i had to go to the hospital for pain killers!) but in the past month i have no had a single moment of rest from the sciatic pain in my *right* leg.

starting from the center of my butt to my ankle. i've exhuasted my painkiller supply and can't seem to get any exercising done because of the pain.

before i start bugging my surgeon/PCP i thought i would ask if this was a common "my body is changing you just have to wait it out" thing?

Have you tried a chiropractor? Pain meds only do that, kill pain, not re-arrange things to relieve the nerve pressure.

You don't know how sorry I am to see your post about dealing with sciatica.  I had a crippling case for several years before my RNY.  That is the reason I lived such a sedentary lifestyle pre-op.  I spent so much money on chiropractic care, massage therapy (once with essential oils - my best results, but didn't "cure" it), and medications, to no avail.  I had finally resorted to hydrocodone in the year before my surgery just to function.  I had to take one to go get groceries for my family each week.  Sometimes the pain medication can help reduce the inflammation somehow and give you some extended relief.  Miraculously, I have only had a twinge or two since surgery and I immediately quit whatever triggered it (like pushing my grocery cart at the end when it's gotten heavy - thankfully I always have had someone with me).  If I were you, I would definitely mention it at your next appointment, especially since it is affecting your ability to exercise.  Unfortunately, it is not safe to take a pain medication to kill the sciatica in order to get in exercise because you can hurt yourself.  Perhaps trying an anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant with a pain medication for a short period will get you over the hump?  I'm hoping your doctor will have an answer for you!  Please keep us posted on this.  You'll be in my thoughts for sure.

Preop I had Sciatica for the last 25 years or so. I used to take mega aspirin for it and it did take the edge off during the worse flare ups. Since surgery as my weight has shifted my center of gravity I can still get twinges of it and Like Shauna I just try to stop doing what is causing it at the time and usually it gets better within a short while. I think we do kinda have to get to a stable weight before we can actually hope to get it treated in a permanent way or it may just eventually settle itself down once we get most or all of the excess weight off. That's what I am hoping for anyway.

Wow! So Sciatica is one of the main reasons I want to hurry up and get this surgery. I have pain that is out of this world. Sometimes down both legs and into my hips. It's very very painful. Painkillers only kill the pain for a little while. I am hoping this surgery will help me greatly.

I will keep you in my prayers, and be sure to ask your doctor to see what they think your next step should be. You def. need to be able to exercise  so I'm sure they will have a word of advice.

Take Care!
